Developer Circle Vienna: Privacy, Ethics & AI
Day 1 | 15:30-18:30 | Room: Lab 1.0
Your Hosts: Dr. Klaudius Kalcher, Chief Scientist at Mostly AI & Ksenia Galkina, AI and Data Analyst at A1
Facebook Developer Circle is hosting a special session at the AI Congress in Vienna. We want to shed some light on the dark corners of the AI topic.
Our first guest speaker – Dr. Klaudius Kalcher, Chief Scientist at Mostly AI – will address the issue of privacy and AI. How can privacy leaks and attacks happen and what are the protective mechanisms against them? The answers to these questions get more and more valuable each day and we are really happy to have such an expert as Klaudius to share his knowledge with us.
Our second guest – Ksenia Galkina, AI and Data Analyst at A1, will tackle not so easy questions of ethics and AI. The social impact of the mighty Algorithm can be huge and scary, but Ksenia believes the open discussion about dangerous sides of AI as well as its limitations is something we cannot avoid anymore – and we for sure won’t.
Join us on the 4th of December and may the force of AI be with us!
Machine Learning with the Oracle Platform
Day 2 | 09:30-13:30 | Room: Lab 1.0
Your Hosts: Mats Stellwall, Data Scientist at Oracle EMEA & Johannes Jochum, Senior Manager Sales Consulting at Oracle Austria
9:30 – 9:55: Introduction to Machine Learning with the Oracle Platform
Oracle has been delivering Machine Learning enabled applications and platforms for decades on multiple levels.
In this session, we will give an introduction on how everyone from a Business User to a Data Scientist can leverage Machine Learning using the Oracle Platform both in the Cloud and on-premise.
You will hear about what customers are doing, how you can use Machine Learning as part of your day to day analysis no matter if you are using big data or relational data or if you are a business user or data scientist.
Speaker: Mats Stellwall | Data Scientist, Oracle EMEA
10:00 – 11:30: Deep dive into Machine Learning with the Oracle Platform (incl live demo)
In this demo we will do a in-depth walkthrough on how you can use machine learning by a single click as part of your visualizations and analysis, how you can build Machine Learning models using Python/R code with notebooks against Big Data and Relational Data and even how you can do machine learning using good old SQL. Everything using Oracle’s state of the art Cloud Infrastructure.
Speaker: Mats Stellwall | Data Scientist, Oracle EMEA
We’ll offer this deep dive demo 2 times. It will be repeated at 12:05 for participants that cannot attend this session.
11:35 – 12:00: Data Science and Engineering
- How do you solve multiple ML problems, for thousands of tenants simultaneously?
- How do you do data science research without direct access to the data?
- How do you scale your solution without requiring an army of data scientists?
Oracle has been solving exactly these problems as it embeds AI into its hundreds of business and consumer applications.
In the session you will learn how we have combined docker, python and apache beam to achieve secure, configurable, scalable, multi-tenant machine learning for our applications.
Speaker: Matt Darwin, Oracle EMEA
Open the Black-box using model agnostic explanation
Day 2 | 14:30-16:30 | Room: Lab 1.0
Your Hosts: Julia Wais, Tax Technology Consultant at PwC Austria & Alexander Kuhn, Data Scientist at PwC Austria
Model explanation is crucial when it comes to tax and legal. In this workshop we will work together in building a rapid ML predictive models for Value Added Tax (VAT) data, and then explain the models decision using Local Interpretable Model Agnostic Explanations (LIME).
The workshop will be organized as follows:
- Equipment: Please bring your laptop if possible
- Time planning: 10 min Intro – 5 min group gatherings – 1 hour working – 30 min presenting the results – 15 min finalizing
- Participants will be split into groups ( max 10 groups)
- We will provide all groups with a simulated dataset with pre-defined VAT rules
- Each group will develop and explain a separate ML/DL model
- The objective at the end is to check using LIME, which ML/DL model has learned the most correct rules

SMB vs. Developers – a perfect match after all?
Day 2 | 09:45-12:00 | Room: Lab 2.0
Your Host: Daniel Kalbeck, WeAreDevelopers
Small and medium-sized businesses can be the developers’ worst nightmare – and they can be everything they ever wished for. The difference lies in knowing what developers want, what they need and what you, as a company, can expect in return.
In order to have an efficient, long-lasting and success-oriented relationship with digitalization, a company needs to know its options – from out- to insourcing, from freelancing to permanent positions – and its potential. Whether it’s about highlighting unique incentives to attract the best developers out there or realizing what developers excel in order to learn from them. Digitalization is now, and it’s vital. This is your only chance.
In order to make this a reality, WeAreDevelopers is hosting condensed, cooperative workshops (2.5 hours each) that allows SMB management to work closely together with developers and digitalists to conquer digital challenges. With patronage and guidance by the Austrian Digitalisation Agency (DIA), the workshop features the following aspects:
- How can SMBs and developers work together?
- How can SMBs develop their own digitalization knowledge?
- What are developers looking for in a business?
- What can SMBs learn from developers in terms of efficiency, flexibility, and curiosity?
As a result, the participants gain highly relevant results:
- Mutual exchange with other members of management
- Insights into the works and lives of developers and how to address them
- Best practice studies on successful digitalization of regional SMBs
