Job description

The Senior Software Engineer will work closely with other engineers and our Product team to design and build world-class services and APIs that are reliable, scalable, and performant. The Content Platform team is responsible for content publishing and delivery services supporting a diverse set of upstream and downstream clients (CMS and related editorial tools, web/mobile frontends, sitemaps, syndication, etc.). As an engineer on the team managing databases, APIs, and related technologies that propagate our content across the web, you will play a key role in supporting the growth of the company.

The Content platform at Business Insider consists of multiple independent services written primarily in JavaScript/TypeScript (with some Golang), and our primary database is MongoDB. We use AWS as our public cloud. The team commonly uses Terraform, Lambda, SNS/SQS, Docker, and Kubernetes (EKS) for day to day work. In addition to publishing and delivery APIs, other platform responsibilities include: cache management, data syncing and denormalization, and various third-party integrations.

The Senior Software Engineer reports directly to the Director of Cloud Engineering and sits on the Content Platform team. This role will be based in Belfast and offers an in office or work from home / hybrid opportunity., * Partnering with engineers to execute business requirements and technical improvements

  • Being proactive and taking ownership of key systems and projects
  • Breaking down complex problems into achievable, prioritized tasks
  • Taking initiative on design challenges to build robust, performant systems
  • Applying engineering best practices to ensure system correctness and resilience
  • Mentoring junior engineers

Requirements

  • Writing clean, maintainable, production-grade code in a modern programming language
  • Experience in using JavaScript/Typescript on the server.
  • Understanding system architecture and downstream effects of code changes
  • Clear communication (both written and verbal)
  • General knowledge of content databases (noSQL experience a bonus)
  • Ability to implement unit, integration, and functional tests
  • Experience in fullstack development
  • Adaptable and willingness to try new tools, technologies, packages, etc.
  • Team oriented mindset

Bonus points

  • Experience working with web APIs
  • Familiarity with CI/CD processes
  • Experience working in Golang
  • Familiarity with Agile development processes
  • You have worked in prior experience in the media industry
