Job description

As Director of DevOps, you will define and lead Hubexo's global cloud and DevOps strategy - building the platforms, people, and practices that power our software delivery worldwide. You'll own our AWS cloud estate and lead a distributed team of Cloud Engineers, creating a secure, automated, and scalable environment that enables our development teams to deliver value to customers quickly, reliably, and safely.

Your leadership will directly influence how efficiently Hubexo builds and operates software, how effectively we control cost and risk, and how confidently we scale as a global business. Core ResponsibilitiesStrategy and Leadership

  • Define and deliver the overall strategy for cloud and DevOps operations, aligned to Hubexo's business objectives and modernisation roadmap.

  • Build and lead a high-performing global DevOps function, initially centred in Newcastle, with clear goals for performance, cost, and innovation.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, ownership, and learning across the Cloud Engineering community.

  • Develop an operating model that integrates DevOps and FinOps principles into every stage of software delivery. Cloud Architecture and Automation

  • Own the design, build, and optimisation of Hubexo's AWS infrastructure, ensuring it is secure, scalable, and reliable.

  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform and AWS CloudFormation to automate provisioning and environment management.

  • Partner with Software Engineering teams to design infrastructure that supports their needs, ensuring efficient deployment through containerisation and orchestration tools (EKS, ECS, Docker).

  • Develop and manage high-availability, fault-tolerant architectures using Auto Scaling, Load Balancing, and Amazon Route 53. Security, Compliance, and Reliability

  • Own cloud security and compliance across AWS services, ensuring controls align with frameworks such as ISO 27001 and NIST.

  • Oversee identity and access management (IAM), encryption, and network security.

  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and observability solutions (e.g., Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus) to detect and respond to incidents effectively.

  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans, including multi-AZ deployments and cross-region replication. Collaboration and Enablement

  • Act as the primary bridge between Technology Delivery, Solutions Architecture, Operations, Finance, and IT Security to ensure alignment and smooth delivery of services.

  • Support Software Engineering teams in establishing DevOps best practices and CI/CD standards, enabling rapid and reliable releases.

  • Lead by example, collaborating closely with developers to remove friction, simplify workflows, and improve developer experience. FinOps and Optimisation

  • Establish and embed a FinOps culture that connects cloud usage to business outcomes.

  • Implement tooling and reporting that provide visibility into cloud spend by team, application, and project.

  • Drive cost optimisation through right-sizing, automation, and use of reserved or spot instances.

  • Manage the strategic relationship with AWS to maximise commercial, technical, and enablement value for Hubexo. Key Performance Indicators

  • Execution of the cloud strategy roadmap - delivery of key milestones on time and within budget.

  • Service uptime and mean time to restore - demonstrating platform reliability and response readiness.

  • Security and compliance - successful internal and external audits.

  • Change lead time - reduction in cycle time from commit to production.

  • Cloud cost optimisation - measurable efficiency improvements and cost savings.

  • Team engagement - retention, performance, and satisfaction of global Cloud Engineers.
