Database Administrator (DBA) - Outside IR35 - Edinburgh

Location: Edinburgh (Hybrid - 2 days onsite per week) Contract: Initial 6 months Rate: £500-550 (Outside IR35)

One of Loriens Public Sector clients are looking for an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) with strong SQL Server expertise and hands-on experience with Azure Cosmos DB to join their engineering team. This role is critical to optimising the performance, reliability, and scalability of mission-critical databases supporting a large Legacy application currently facing latency challenges.

You will work on both strategic improvements and tactical performance tuning, ensuring their data platform evolves while continuing to support existing business processes effectively.

• Administer, configure, and support SQL Server environments across development, test, and production.
• Manage and optimise Azure Cosmos DB workloads for cost-effective, scalable performance.
• Perform proactive capacity planning, patching, and upgrades.
• Identify and resolve database performance issues impacting Legacy systems.
• Improve query and indexing strategies, schema design, and execution plans.
• Ensure compliance with data legislation and security standards (GDPR, government policy).
• Collaborate with engineering and delivery teams to support service transformation initiatives.

Essential Skills

• Strong SQL Server administration experience in live service environments.
• Expertise in performance tuning and troubleshooting database bottlenecks.
• Practical experience with Azure Cosmos DB (throughput, indexing, partitioning).
• Understanding of HA/DR design principles and tooling.
• Commitment to secure, well-governed data management practices.

Desirable

• Experience in public sector IT services and compliance standards.
• Familiarity with cloud-hosted operational databases and Azure infrastructure.
• Knowledge of automation tools (PowerShell, ARM/Bicep, Terraform, DevOps pipelines).
• Experience supporting Legacy application transformation or migration projects.
