Job description
Thames Water is offering an exciting opportunity to join our Water Resources team as a Data Modeller, where you'll help shape how London's water is managed over the next 100 years.
This role is ideal for someone curious about how complex systems work, who enjoys exploring how data and models interact, and is motivated by solving real-world environmental challenges.
As a Data Modeller, you'll play a vital role in safeguarding future water supplies by using statistical and computational models to analyse and inform strategic water resource decisions across the Thames Water patch. You'll be part of a team that's making big calls from drought planning to long-term supply demand strategies, and your insights will help shape how we deliver great water.
What you'll be doing as a Data Modeller
-
Undertake water resource system analysis and provide expert insight on solutions to support the maintenance and enhancement of our water supply capability.
-
Translate complex technical outputs into clear, actionable insights for non-technical audiences
-
Support delivery of key inputs to our Water Resources Management Plan and Drought Plan, including liaising with external parties, such as the Environment Agency, on modelling and analysis as required.
-
Collaborate across teams to share expertise and strengthen technical resilience
-
Responsible for the provision of water resources data and information, including metrics of deployable output, climate change impact, outage, and headroom outputs to support operations, regulatory reporting, and long-term planning.
-
Support the provision of data and information on the status of our water resources and the risk of drought, to enable an analysis of the water supply risk to our customers.
-
Use our models to analyse our water resource system performance and help identify and promote the development of our modelling tools and supply-demand assessment methodologies, including influencing those required for the Water Resources Southeast (WRSE) regional planning group.
Requirements
- Demonstrated curiosity and systems thinking, with a desire to understand how complex water supply systems operate and respond to change.
- Strong coding skills in Python and R.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a critical approach to interpreting data and model results.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to translate technical findings into clear insights for diverse stakeholders.
Extra qualities that would be a great fit for our team
- Proven modelling expertise using Pywr and Aquator, including developing, maintaining, and communicating model outputs for operational and strategic decision-making.
- Proven modelling experience in hydrological and groundwater models.
- Strong GIS skills.
- Sound understanding of water resources regulation and planning frameworks, including how regulatory requirements influence modelling and investment decisions.
- Effective project management and organisational skills, delivering high-quality modelling and analysis work to agreed timelines and standards.
