On March 8, we are celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) by highlighting all women, in all their diversities. We embrace their facets and intersections of faith, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity, or disability. Globally it's a moment to recognize the incredible contributions of women around the world, and is also a call to action for accelerating gender equity. Especially young women need role models to look up to. Encouraging more women to study technology can open up whole new possibilities for young people to get into the industry at entry level. Working in tech is not just about coding. It’s about all aspects of your career, no matter what role you hold in tech or how you work with tech. This special episode of WeAreDevelopers Live is all about inclusion, diversity, and equity! So, doesn’t matter your gender, sexual orientation, ethnic or financial background – everyone with a passion for software technology, coding, and sharing knowledge is welcome.

The history of women in computing has largely been lost, like the histories of factory workers who built the first cars. Yet, women invented programming, were the original developers for the ENIAC, created assembly language and developed the first compiler (not to mention the term “compiler” and “bug”), and were instrumental to the development of many seminal programming languages. So what happened? It’s a drama that’s equal parts cultural excavation and celebration. In this talk, Brenda Romero digs up this fascinating history, explores what happened, and looks at how the artefacts of this legacy still affect computing and its growth today.
Brenda Romero is an award-winning game designer, Fulbright scholar, entrepreneur, artist, writer and creative director who entered the video game industry in 1981.
Large crowds full of strangers. Many sounds. Senses on overdrive. A large, noisy conference is the antithesis of what we introverts prefer and crave. Even being remote isn't always a plus - this little black box you call camera and these features of meeting random people can be just as daunting. You can relate?
If yes, you're just like me and 30-50 percent of the population, as research suggests. Wait, you might think, even me, as a speaker? Yes, this still fits together: Let me show you how you may start to enjoy conferences, even if you are not as much of an extrovert as you think you need to be.
After my education as an application developer, I contributed to product development at shopware AG for about six years now: First in quality assurance and now, as Software Developer. I own both views of the product - that of a tester and that of a developer: I use this primarily to strengthen trust in test automation and to support the testers. The automation in the end-to-end area of shopware originates from my pen, and I continue to push it firmly.
One of the powerful ways to speed up your journey to success is to emerge yourself in the right environment - community, which can influence your mindset, motivation, goals, and opportunities that life brings.
I will share my story: how joining the right community changed my mindset and empowered me to reach the next professional level, from being a good software developer to becoming a frequent speaker at tech conferences, mentor, and role model for a younger generation of women in tech. I will talk about the power of communities, and how joining them can influence your career, and what other benefits it may bring. I will also provide useful links to female communities worth checking out.

Lea graduated from a technical collage in the year of 2022, where she learnt how versatile and interesting the world of information technology can be. However, when she was in grammar school, she couldn't imagine herself in a technical college when thinking about future careers, until someone told her about the IT-Branches. This almost 180 Degree twist is what led her to share her experience with younger students. Now, she works for BEKO as a software developer since around half a year ago, learning new concepts and programming languages.
