More often, it is shaped by leadership decisions - or their absence. In this talk, I explore why software quality, security, and team performance are fundamentally leadership problems, not tooling problems. Drawing from real-world experience as a developer and later as a technical leader in middle management, I will share common leadership anti-patterns such as micromanagement, responsibility without authority, and KPI-driven control - and how they silently damage teams and codebases alike. I will connect leadership behavior directly to technical outcomes: how unrealistic planning creates technical debt, how fear breaks feedback and security practices, and why loyalty to your team is not a risk but a prerequisite for sustainable delivery. This talk is not about blaming individuals. It is about recognizing harmful patterns, understanding their impact, and learning what effective engineering leadership looks like in practice. Attendees will leave with concrete takeaways they can apply immediately - whether they are senior engineers, tech leads, or moving into leadership roles ## Speaker ### [Oskar Kruschitz](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/@oskar-kruschitz) Head of Product at Advanced Engineering ## Related talks at this congress - [The Neuroscience of Engineering Culture: Why Your Team’s Brains Are Crashing](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/events/world-congress-2026-europe-virtual-stage/sessions/1623-the-neuroscience-of) — Karolina Boguszewska - [Why Smart Engineering Teams Make Bad Decisions](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/events/world-congress-2026-europe-virtual-stage/sessions/1648-why-smart) — Magdalena Szumna - [Thoughts on (Modern?)
