# Monster Motel – Debugging the Patterns That Secretly Corrupt Your Work

Developers are great at debugging code – but often far less practiced at debugging their own thinking.
Many of the issues that slow individuals and teams down, block progress or quietly drain energy are not technical problems at all. They are hidden mental patterns that feel - at first sight - rational, professional, and even responsible. The real problem begins when these patterns secretly and unnoticed start working on the codebase with us.
Left unchecked, they influence decisions, architecture and collaboration. The result is rarely clean code: endless refactoring loops, over-engineered solutions, delayed decisions or teams compensating for structural issues through over-commitment and burnout.
Welcome to the Monster Motel that is created in your head! In this talk these motel guests aka invisible patterns become visible. Using metaphors instead of blame, the talk introduces a small cast of familiar “monsters” developers will instantly recognize — such as the Overthinking Kraken that refactors forever, the Perfectionism Vampire draining time in the name of quality, or the Impostor Demon showing up even in experienced roles. And what if these monsters team up which each other?
This talk is not about soft skills, therapy or motivation hacks.
It is about mental debugging: understanding these patterns, how they quietly infiltrate daily work — and how to debug them before they start corrupting decisions, teamwork, and even code quality.
Because if the monsters keep committing to your daily work unnoticed, no amount of "refactoring" will fix the real problem.
