Engineering teams make thousands of decisions every year — under time pressure, uncertainty, and incomplete information. Despite this, most organisations still rely on intuition, seniority, or speed as proxies for good judgment.

The result? Tech decisions that don’t age well.

In this talk, I’ll show why bias is not an individual weakness but a predictable systems failure — and how engineering teams can design decision-making processes that work with human cognition instead of against it.

Drawing from real-world work with scaling tech organisations, we’ll unpack:

- Why experienced teams are often more, not less, vulnerable to bias
- How common decision shortcuts quietly affect architecture choices, prioritisation, and hiring
- How slowing down to thoroughly reflect upon each decision is unrealistic, and making better decision structures is essential.

You’ll learn a practical, lightweight framework to improve decision quality without killing momentum, including:

- How to spot biased decisions before outcomes fail
- When intuition helps — and when it should be challenged
- Simple decision structures teams can apply immediately
