Especially in technical teams, where logic and evidence are central to how we work. And yet, time and again, highly competent teams make decisions that later surprise even themselves. This talk explores why decision-making in complex engineering environments often breaks down not because of a lack of expertise, but because of invisible assumptions shaping how problems are framed, options are weighed, and dissent is expressed (or ignored). In today’s reality of multinational, multicultural, and geographically distributed tech teams, decision-making is further impacted by unexamined assumptions about capability, priorities, and authority. These assumptions quietly influence whose input is trusted, what is treated as “common sense,” and which risks are downplayed or ignored, before data event enters the room. Drawing on real-world examples from global tech organisations and product teams, the session reframes decision-making as a systemic phenomenon. Culture, context, and power dynamics quietly shape outcomes, even in teams that pride themselves on being rational and meritocratic. This session is designed for engineering leaders, tech leads, senior individual contributors, and product leaders working in high-stakes technical environments. ## Speaker ### [Magdalena Szumna](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/@magdalena-szumna) Founder of INDIGO Diversity Consulting ## Related talks at this congress - [Unbiased Decision-Making: Designing Better Decisions in High-Pressure Engineering Teams](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/events/world-congress-2026-europe-virtual-stage/sessions/1631-unbiased-decision) — Anna W Kriss Petersson - [From Code to Culture: Why Leadership Determines Software Quality](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/events/world-congress-2026-europe-virtual-stage/sessions/1540-from-code-to-culture) — Oskar Kruschitz - [We Know Developers Are Neurodiverse.
