Ignoring it is no longer a sensible option. In this talk, we’ll explain the basics of quantum mechanics, and how its core principles - superposition, entanglement, and quantum gates - are leveraged by quantum computers. We’ll see which complex problems (like simulation, optimization, and potentially disrupting cybersecurity) they are uniquely suited to solve, because they aren't a magic bullet for every task. How are big tech players and startups investing in the space? What real-world applications already exist, when will it hit the mainstream, and does China really do quantum encryption in space? Lastly, how can we prepare for a quantum-enabled future? ## Speakers ### [John Fletcher](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/@john-fletcher) Staff Engineer at codecentric ### [Lorenzo Petricone](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/@lorenzo-petricone) Fullstack Developer at codecentric ## Related talks at this congress - [From CPUs to QPUs: A Software Engineer’s Guide to Quantum Computing](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/events/world-congress-2026-europe/sessions/988-from-cpus-to-qpus-a) — André Alves - [Post-Quantum Cryptography: Preparing for Q-Day](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/events/world-congress-2026-europe/sessions/1191-post-quantum) — Tim Schade - [Simple, Clean, Intuitive, and Qrisp: Quantum Linear Algebra for Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/events/world-congress-2026-europe/sessions/1017-simple-clean) — Matic Petrič - [Quantum Computing: Separating the Breakthroughs from the Buzz](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/events/world-congress-2026-europe/sessions/1342-quantum-computing) — Yuval Dvir, Marcus Hennig
