This role is highly execution-focused and hands-on, owning the technical bring-up of Industrial PCs (IPCs), PLCs, industrial networks, and field devices during installation and commissioning phases. The engineer serves as a technical authority on-site, partnering closely with contractors, system integrators, vendors, and internal engineering teams to ensure systems are installed, tested, and commissioned safely, reliably, and in accordance with project standards and operational requirements. Key job responsibilities Deployment & Commissioning * Execute on-site commissioning activities for sorters, conveyors, and automated work cells. * Provision, configure, and validate Linux-based IPCs, PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, and field devices per project standards. * Perform I/O checkouts, network validation, and phased system bring-up activities. * Execute commissioning and test plans, including sequencing, dependencies, and acceptance criteria. * Support dry runs, functional testing, and integrated system testing through startup and handover. Troubleshooting & Technical Support * Serve as the primary on-site technical resource for controls, networking, and system integration issues. * Diagnose and resolve industrial networking problems (e.g., IP conflicts, VLAN issues, switch configuration, fieldbus communication faults). * Troubleshoot PLC logic, device configuration, safety interlocks, and system-level faults across electrical, controls, and mechanical boundaries. * Perform structured root-cause analysis and support implementation of permanent corrective actions. * Document issues, resolutions, and lessons learned to support continuous improvement and future deployments. On-Site Technical Leadership * Provide day-to-day technical direction to technicians, electricians, and commissioning support personnel during system deployment. * Coordinate closely with system integrators, OEMs, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and unblock progress. * Ensure compliance with safety requirements, quality standards, and commissioning best practices during installation and testing. Integration & Handover * Validate equipment functionality against design specifications, controls standards, and operational requirements. * Support integration of equipment into Warehouse Control Systems (WCS) and higher-level orchestration layers. * Participate in turnover activities, ensuring systems are stable, documented, and ready for operational ownership. Continuous Improvement * Identify opportunities to improve commissioning efficiency, reliability, and repeatability. * Contribute to the development and refinement of commissioning tools, test procedures, and deployment standards. * Provide feedback to design and integration teams to improve future system designs and deployment outcomes. ## Related Videos - [Remote Driving on Plant Grounds with State-of-the-Art Cloud Technologies](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/251-remote-driving-on-plant-grounds-with-state-of-the-art-cloud-technologies) - [Coffee with Developers: David Heinemeier Hansson](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/875-coffee-with-developers-david-heinemeier-hansson) - [Go with the Flow: Stop the Leaks Before Your Memory's a Waterfall!](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100073-go-with-the-flow-stop-the-leaks-before-your-memory-s-a-waterfall) - [Docker network without Docker](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1418-docker-network-without-docker) - [More efficient software for more efficient microchips](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1164-more-efficient-software-for-more-efficient-microchips) - [Coroutine explained yet again 60 years later](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/690-coroutine-explained-yet-again-60-years-later) ## Related Articles - [Top-Paying Tech Jobs (with Salaries)](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/372-top-paying-tech-jobs-with-salaries) - [The Most Popular IT Jobs on the Market](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/376-the-most-popular-it-jobs-on-the-market) - [Is Software Engineering Over-Saturated?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/418-is-software-engineering-over-saturated) - [Where to Find Entry-Level Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/397-where-to-find-entry-level-software-engineering-jobs) - [The 12 Best Jobs for Software Engineers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/401-the-12-best-jobs-for-software-engineers) - [Where To Find Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/396-where-to-find-software-engineering-jobs)
