This role is primarily focused on backend services, APIs, data-processing workflows, database interactions, production support, and backend geospatial systems. Frontend work may be part of the role when needed, but it is not the primary focus. The role requires strong judgment, practical debugging skills, clear communication, and the ability to move between planned feature work, urgent defects, technical debt cleanup, and release support., Education and Skills: * 5+ years of professional software engineering experience. * Required production experience with Python. * AI fluency, including the ability to use AI-assisted development tools effectively across planning, implementation, testing, debugging, review, and documentation. * Accountability for all AI-assisted output, including correctness, security, maintainability, and production impact. * Strong experience building and maintaining APIs and backend services. * Experience working with databases, SQL, and data-backed application workflows. * Experience with geospatial data, spatial processing, or map-based data workflows. * Experience integrating with third-party systems, APIs, or external data providers. * Working knowledge of frontend development sufficient to support full-stack delivery when needed. * Strong understanding of automated testing, code review, Git workflows, and agile delivery. * Ability to debug complex issues across service boundaries, data layers, and asynchronous workflows. * Clear communication with technical and non-technical partners. * Peer mentorship through code review, pairing, and technical discussion. Technologies: Not every item is required - breadth and willingness to learn matter more than checking every box. * Python, Flask, Celery * TypeScript, Node.js * React * SQL Server and stored procedures * Geospatial processing libraries and spatial data formats * Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines * Logging, monitoring, and observability tools * GitHub, Jira, and modern code review workflows * AI-assisted development tools Experience: * Experience supporting production systems with active users. * Experience with background jobs, queues, asynchronous workflows, or long-running data-processing tasks. * Experience improving performance, reliability, and operational visibility. * Experience working across multiple scrum teams or product areas. * Experience modernizing legacy systems without disrupting existing users. * Experience writing clear technical notes, handoffs, and troubleshooting documentation. ## Description * Design, build, test, and maintain backend services, APIs, data-processing workflows, and database-backed features. * Develop and support geospatial data-processing workflows and integrations with third-party systems. * Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate software delivery, improve engineering quality, explore implementation options, and strengthen technical decision-making. * Use AI to improve tests, identify edge cases, analyze failures, and strengthen regression coverage. * Use AI-assisted review techniques to pre-check changes for bugs, missing tests, readability issues, and regression risk before opening or reviewing pull requests. * Support targeted frontend changes when needed to complete or unblock backend-driven work. * Diagnose production issues using logs, monitoring tools, database evidence, and application behavior. * Ship focused fixes and hotfixes while preserving system stability and existing contracts. * Collaborate with QA, Design, Technology Business Partners, product stakeholders, and engineers across scrum teams. * Review pull requests and provide practical peer feedback on correctness, maintainability, testing, and clarity. * Contribute implementation input during technical design discussions. * Improve reliability, performance, test coverage, CI/CD workflows, and developer experience. * Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, troubleshooting notes, and handoff material. * Balance planned delivery with production support, release validation, and defect resolution. ## Related Videos - [Celery on AWS ECS - the art of background tasks & continuous deployment](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/561-celery-on-aws-ecs-the-art-of-background-tasks-continuous-deployment) - [Docker Compose: Rediscovered](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1978-docker-compose-rediscovered) - [Collaboration Quantified: Lessons from Open Source Developer Networks](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1422-collaboration-quantified-lessons-from-open-source-developer-networks) - [Your next 10x engineer isn't in your city.
