This isn't a "keep the lights on" job. You'll be hands-on across a large, varied, cloud-first database estate - tuning performance, hardening resilience, guiding migrations (we're actively moving SQL Server workloads to Aurora PostgreSQL via Babelfish), and helping product teams build data layers that scale. If you enjoy solving hard problems, mentoring others, and having a real say in architectural decisions, you'll fit right in., * 5+ years as a DBA, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead capacity. * Deep hands-on experience with SQL Server and MySQL / PostgreSQL (ideally both). Comfortable writing, reading, and refactoring complex queries and stored procedures. * Solid track record running production databases in AWS - RDS, Aurora, parameter groups, snapshots, cross-region replication, Performance Insights. * Real experience with NoSQL stores (MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis, or similar) and knowing when to reach for them vs a relational DB. * Strong grasp of backup, DR, and high-availability patterns. * Scripting skills in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation. Nice-to-haves * Exposure to Aurora PostgreSQL Babelfish or other SQL Server migration work. * Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform), CI/CD pipelines, and observability tooling (Datadog). * Experience supporting high-volume, low-latency systems - travel, e-commerce, fintech, or similar * Familiarity with data lake / analytics patterns (S3, Athena, DBeaver). How you work * You explain the "why" behind decisions, not just the "how". * You're pragmatic - you know the perfect fix isn't always the right fix today. * You're comfortable pushing back constructively when something doesn't smell right. * English is your working language (written and spoken); Spanish is a plus but not required. ## Description * Own the health of our production databases across AWS - Aurora PostgreSQL, Aurora MySQL, SQL Server on RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache for Redis, and MongoDB. Monitoring, tuning, backups, DR - the full lifecycle. Lead database migrations and re-platforming projects, including our ongoing SQL Server * Aurora PostgreSQL (Babelfish) effort and Aurora cluster splits for high-traffic workloads. * Tune performance where it hurts most - query optimisation, indexing strategy, partitioning, and capacity planning. You'll use Query Store, Extended Events, Performance Insights, and Datadog to find and fix bottlenecks before they become incidents. * Design for resilience - shape our disaster recovery processes, cross-account RDS access patterns, immutable backups, and failover testing. * Partner with engineering teams on schema design, data migrations, and query review - helping dev teams ship faster without creating tech debt. * Champion security & compliance - encryption, access controls, audit logging, GDPR-aligned data hygiene, and secrets management. * Mentor and level up other DBAs and engineers who work with data. Share what you know, write it down, and raise the bar. ## Related Videos - [Database Magic behind 40 Million operations/s](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/748-database-magic-behind-40-million-operations-s) - [Leveraging Real time data in FSIs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/806-leveraging-real-time-data-in-fsis) - [MySQL Protocol Features You Should Be Aware Of](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100267-mysql-protocol-features-you-should-be-aware-of) - [Reducing LLM Calls with Vector Search Patterns - Raphael De Lio (Redis)](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1714-reducing-llm-calls-with-vector-search-patterns-raphael-de-lio-redis) - [Tomorrow's cloud data platforms - fully managed database-as-a-service (DBaaS)](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/254-tomorrow-s-cloud-data-platforms-fully-managed-database-as-a-service-dbaas) - [Branch your database like your code: How schema changes and pull requests go hand in hand](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/350-branch-your-database-like-your-code-how-schema-changes-and-pull-requests-go-hand-in-hand) ## Related Articles - [Spanish Business Culture and Etiquette](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/353-spanish-business-culture-and-etiquette) - [Making Data Warehouses Fast: A Developer’s Story](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/107-making-data-warehouses-fast-a-developer-s-story) - [Find a Developer Job: 12 Best Job Sites For Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/165-find-a-developer-job-12-best-job-sites-for-developers) - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs) - [The Best Job Search Websites of 2025](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/368-the-best-job-search-websites-of-2025) - [Highest Paying Tech Companies for Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/220-highest-paying-tech-companies-for-developers)
