Ever wonder how millions of grocery products get correctly identified, enriched, and made available to customers - both on shelves and online? That's the problem we're solving, and we need a software development manager to lead the team doing it. Here's what makes this role unique: you'll lead engineers who build systems at the intersection of machine learning and product data quality. Your team uses large language models, automated ML, and real-time data from third-party providers to answer questions like "which product does this barcode actually belong to?" and "are the temperature, expiry, and dimension attributes for this item correct?" These aren't theoretical problems - when we get them wrong, products spoil, customers get the wrong item, and supply chains break down. You'll own the end-to-end technical strategy for catalog data accuracy across grocery. That means distributed systems processing millions of records, ML pipelines that train and infer on weekly cadences, and data integrations with external providers across multiple countries. You'll also build internal tools that put catalog intelligence directly in the hands of business teams. Key job responsibilities - Lead a team of engineers building and operating distributed systems that process millions of product records across grocery marketplaces. - Own the technical vision for resolving product identity defects - where a single barcode incorrectly maps to multiple products - using data matching, third-party OCR sources, and scoring algorithms. - Drive the evolution of ML infrastructure - including scheduled training/inference pipelines, LLM-based attribute validation, and automated publishing workflows. - Guide the strategy for ingesting, transforming, and synchronizing third-party product data into the catalog across international marketplaces. - Build and maintain internal tooling that gives product managers and business users visibility and control over grocery catalog operations. - Make architectural decisions for scaling early-stage systems while ensuring operational excellence across multiple AWS accounts and regions. - Translate complex supply chain and catalog business requirements into concrete technical solutions - prototyping rapidly and iterating with cross-functional partners. - Partner with applied science teams on ML model development and product ionization. - Foster an entrepreneurial engineering culture focused on innovation, ownership, and high-velocity delivery. - Mentor and develop engineers, promoting technical excellence and career growth. About the team This is a small, entrepreneurial team where everyone wears many hats. You'll have the freedom to define architecture, influence product direction, and ship solutions that directly impact how Amazon and Whole Foods Market source and sell groceries. If you want a role where you can see your work on store shelves the same week you deploy it - this is it. ## Related Videos - [Developer Time Is Valuable - Use the Right Tools - Kilian Valkhof](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1792-developer-time-is-valuable-use-the-right-tools-kilian-valkhof) - [Modern Data Architectures need Software Engineering](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1030-modern-data-architectures-need-software-engineering) - [Fireside Chat with Werner Vogels, VP & CTO, Amazon.com & Daniel Gebler, CTO at Picnic](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1405-fireside-chat-with-werner-vogels-vp-cto-amazon-com-daniel-gebler-cto-at-picnic) - [Are Code Reviews Worth It?
