Working within established change management, security, and maintenance procedures, this individual will deploy operating system updates, firmware upgrades, and security patches across servers, virtualization platforms, storage systems, and enterprise network infrastructure. In addition to remediation activities, this role will support operational maturity by maintaining accurate asset inventories, developing standardized procedures, documenting lessons learned, and creating transition-ready documentation to support ongoing infrastructure operations. Primary Responsibilities Inventory Verification & Remediation Planning * Reconcile physical, virtual, and network assets against authoritative inventory systems to identify missing, inactive, unsupported, or non-reporting devices. * Review vulnerability assessments, patch compliance dashboards, vendor advisories, and platform dependencies to prioritize remediation efforts. * Develop phased deployment strategies, maintenance schedules, pilot groups, testing procedures, and rollback plans. * Track and document patching exceptions related to legacy systems, hardware limitations, or business-critical constraints, including required mitigation plans or risk acceptance documentation. Patch Deployment & Execution * Deploy operating system patches and platform updates across Windows and Linux server environments using enterprise patch management and configuration tools. * Apply upgrades and maintenance to virtualization platforms, storage systems, backup solutions, load balancers, and infrastructure management components following established procedures. * Coordinate and execute firmware and software updates across network infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless platforms, and related management systems. Validation & Troubleshooting * Verify backups, snapshots, system health, capacity thresholds, network configurations, and rollback readiness prior to implementing changes. * Perform post-change validation to confirm system availability, application functionality, network connectivity, security services, and platform performance. * Troubleshoot patching failures, agent communication issues, configuration inconsistencies, pending reboots, and compliance gaps to achieve targeted remediation objectives. Change Management & Operational Governance * Create, document, schedule, and close change records, including implementation plans, testing results, rollback procedures, and supporting documentation. * Execute work within approved maintenance windows while proactively communicating risks, blockers, and critical issues. * Collaborate with infrastructure, security, application, and operations teams to ensure adherence to security standards and least-privilege access principles. Documentation & Service Transition * Maintain centralized tracking of patching activities, asset ownership, target versions, compliance status, timelines, and outcomes. * Develop and enhance operational runbooks for discovery, validation, deployment, troubleshooting, and escalation processes. * Prepare transition documentation, including open risks, outstanding remediation efforts, support procedures, and knowledge transfer materials for long-term support teams. Expected Deliverables * Validated Asset Inventory: Reconciled inventory of in-scope systems, ownership, criticality, dependencies, and version baselines. * Patching & Remediation Plan: Prioritized remediation backlog with deployment schedules, maintenance windows, and stakeholder alignment. * Completed Remediation Activities: Successful execution of patching initiatives with documented outcomes, exceptions, and residual risks. * Operational Reporting: Regular status reporting reflecting patch compliance, vulnerability reduction, outstanding issues, and remediation progress. * Transition Documentation: Updated runbooks, support documentation, escalation procedures, and knowledge transfer assets to support ongoing operations. ## Related Videos - [The Sustainability Race: AI's Promises, Pitfalls and Potential](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100155-the-sustainability-race-ai-s-promises-pitfalls-and-potential) - [Playing Pong on a shoulder press machine](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100140-playing-pong-on-a-shoulder-press-machine) - [Dev & Test in the Cloud?
