Learn more about the work modes. ## Description The Academic IT Division of HITS seeks a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented leader to serve as Director of Enterprise Applications and Development. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Information Officer and Senior Director of Academic IT, this position provides strategic and operational leadership for the division's enterprise application service areas and leads a high-performing team responsible for critical research and education technology platforms. The Director oversees application services supporting Epic research workflows and functionality, biospecimen management, clinical trial management systems, custom software, and other enterprise research and academic applications. This role is responsible for guiding the full application lifecycle, including strategy, development, integration, deployment, optimization, and ongoing operations, in support of Michigan Medicine's research and academic missions. Success in this role requires a strong and visionary leader who can build collaborative partnerships, develop and mentor teams, drive innovation, and navigate complex organizational environments. The Director will represent Academic IT through active participation in Michigan Medicine IT governance, strategic planning, and cross-functional initiatives, helping shape technology strategies that advance institutional priorities and improve operational effectiveness. Responsibilities* Strategic Leadership & Planning * Provide strategic leadership for enterprise application services in support of Michigan Medicine's academic mission and vision. * Lead complex organizational change initiatives, including communication and stakeholder engagement strategies, to support successful adoption and operational effectiveness. * Identify emerging trends, technologies, and opportunities related to application services and collaborate with stakeholders to assess organizational impact and priorities. * Contribute to strategic, technical, application, and project planning efforts across the Academic IT division. * Serve as a leader and representative for Academic IT and UMMS in institutional initiatives, committees, governance groups, and workgroups related to IT services. Application & Service Delivery * Oversee the full lifecycle of application services, including planning, design, selection, development, testing, implementation, integration, maintenance, and ongoing operations. * Ensure application services effectively support the needs of the UMMS, including faculty, staff, and institutional partners. * Establish and maintain operational processes, procedures, standards, and best practices to ensure high-quality, customer-focused service delivery. * Ensure effective management of work assignments, workload balancing, project tracking, demand management, and service delivery across the Academic IT portfolio. * Ensure projects and operational initiatives are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with organizational priorities. Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration * Partner stakeholders and leadership from across UMMS, Office of Research, Clinical Trial Support Office, Medical Education, Graduate Medical Organization, and other IT organizations to understand and address evolving technology needs in support of research and education. * Collaborate with HITS senior leadership, governance bodies, and institutional committees to advance enterprise application strategies and strengthen cross-functional partnerships. * Foster strong relationships across Michigan Medicine and the University of Michigan to support collaboration, alignment, and high levels of customer satisfaction. Leadership & Staff Development * Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of IT professionals, including managers and technical staff. * Oversee recruitment, onboarding, coaching, performance management, compensation administration, and employee relations activities. * Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and professional growth through training, cross-training, and career development opportunities. * Provide leadership and guidance to managers to support effective team operations and staff success. Operational Management * Maintain oversight of operational and project budgets, ensuring alignment of staffing, technology, testing, materials, and capital investment needs with organizational priorities, in coordination with finance partners and the Senior Director for the division. * Manage service demand, resource allocation, and operational priorities to ensure sustainable and effective delivery of application services. * Monitor operational performance and implement improvements to enhance efficiency, service quality, and organizational value. Innovation & Continuous Improvement * Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices related to research and academic IT services. * Evaluate and implement innovative technologies and processes that support Michigan Medicine's research, education, and operational objectives. * Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance service delivery, operational maturity, and user experience., Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
