Call it 0 to 2 years in. * You know your way around TypeScript or JavaScript and Node, and you want to get good at it. * You understand the basics of databases and SQL. Postgres is a plus, not a must. * You've built or called an API before. If GraphQL is new to you, no problem; curiosity beats mastery here. * You're careful. When money and someone's tax data are on the line, asking a question beats guessing. * You can explain your thinking, in code and in writing. * You like feedback and want to get better at the craft. NICE TO HAVE * Any hands-on time with AWS or serverless. * A rough grasp of auth (JWTs, OAuth) or handling sensitive data. * An interest in fintech: payments, tax, banking, KYC, moving money around. * Bits of our stack: Hasura, Segment, Twilio, SendGrid. * Curiosity about building for many countries at once, with different currencies and languages. ## Description This is a junior backend role on a small, senior team. You'll write real code that ships to production early: features across our GraphQL API, our serverless services, and the Postgres data model underneath. These are the systems that validate payments, onboard vendors, and guard tax and identity data., * Write backend features in TypeScript on AWS Lambda, backed by Postgres and Hasura GraphQL. * Work on the data model and API: writing migrations, adjusting Hasura permissions, running GraphQL codegen. * Help build and maintain integrations with our fintech and compliance partners. * Learn how we handle sensitive data like tax IDs, identity documents, and payment details, behind encryption and tight access controls. * Pitch in on the logic behind global payouts, W-9/W-8 collection, tax validation, and 1099s. * Help keep things healthy in production with OpenTelemetry, Sentry, and Pino. * Write tests that actually catch bugs (Jest, plus Playwright for end-to-end). * Build alongside product and frontend engineers in a Next.js app., TypeScript · Node.js 20 · Next.js · React · Hasura GraphQL · PostgreSQL · AWS Lambda · Serverless Framework · CloudFormation · AWS KMS · Auth0 · Apollo/GraphQL Codegen · Plaid · Unit · Codat · Persona · TaxBit · OpenTelemetry · Sentry · Pino · Jest · Playwright · Doppler · Docker ## Related Videos - [Keeping applications secure by evolving OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100152-keeping-applications-secure-by-evolving-oauth-2-0-and-openid-connect) - [Docker Compose: Rediscovered](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1978-docker-compose-rediscovered) - [From Doubt to Confidence: How Sentry Uses Verdaccio to Bulletproof SDK Releases](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/739-from-doubt-to-confidence-how-sentry-uses-verdaccio-to-bulletproof-sdk-releases) - [Meet Your New BFF: Backend to Frontend without the Duct Tape](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/682-meet-your-new-bff-backend-to-frontend-without-the-duct-tape) - [Debugging in the Dark](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1658-debugging-in-the-dark) - [Docker build without Docker](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100114-docker-build-without-docker) ## Related Articles - [Why Upskilling And Reskilling is Important For Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/428-why-upskilling-and-reskilling-is-important-for-developers) - [Dev Digest 120 - Apple and peers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/455-dev-digest-120-apple-and-peers) - [Dev Digest 121 - AI goes offline](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/456-dev-digest-121-ai-goes-offline) - [Dev Digest 131 - AI'm not sure about OSS](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/472-dev-digest-131-ai-m-not-sure-about-oss) - [What’s the Difference Between Frontend and Backend Development?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/240-what-s-the-difference-between-frontend-and-backend-development) - [Dev Digest 138 - Are you secure about this?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/486-dev-digest-138-are-you-secure-about-this)
