In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain low-level embedded software that enables reliable communication between hardware and higher-level control applications. You will own key components of the embedded platform, including board support packages (BSPs), device drivers, RTOS architecture, hardware abstraction layers, and communication infrastructure across microcontroller-based systems. This position works closely with electrical, controls, systems, and software engineering teams to deliver deterministic, high-performance firmware supporting advanced embedded control applications. What You'll Do * Design and develop real-time embedded firmware using C/C++ for safety-critical systems. * Architect and maintain embedded platform software, including BSPs, hardware abstraction layers, and reusable firmware frameworks. * Develop low-level drivers for peripherals including CAN, SPI, Ethernet, ADC, PWM, GPIO, timers, watchdogs, and other MCU interfaces. * Support board bring-up, hardware validation, and low-level debugging across hardware and software boundaries. * Configure and optimize interrupt handling, task scheduling, memory usage, timing, and deterministic execution. * Develop communication infrastructure supporting protocols such as CAN, CAN FD, SPI, Ethernet, and ARINC 825. * Collaborate with electrical, controls, and systems engineers to integrate firmware with actuators, sensors, battery management systems (BMS), motor drives, and vehicle-level hardware. * Develop diagnostic capabilities, logging, debug interfaces, and automation tools supporting laboratory testing and system validation. * Support Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing activities. * Participate in requirements development, verification planning, configuration management, traceability, and safety-focused development processes., This is an opportunity to build the embedded platform that serves as the foundation for advanced, safety-critical control systems. Your work will directly impact system reliability, deterministic performance, and the successful integration of hardware and software across next-generation technologies. ## Related Videos - [More efficient software for more efficient microchips](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1164-more-efficient-software-for-more-efficient-microchips) - [The Gashlycrumb Tinies of AI Networking You Must Know (or Languish!)](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2067-the-gashlycrumb-tinies-of-ai-networking-you-must-know-or-languish) - [Playing Pong on a shoulder press machine](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100140-playing-pong-on-a-shoulder-press-machine) - [Building a hypercar from scratch](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/607-building-a-hypercar-from-scratch) - [Agile work at CARIAD – Creating a customer web application for controlling the vehicle ](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/200-agile-work-at-cariad-creating-a-customer-web-application-for-controlling-the-vehicle) - [Docker network without Docker](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1418-docker-network-without-docker) ## Related Articles - [Is Software Engineering Hard?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/448-is-software-engineering-hard) - [What is Software Engineering?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/289-what-is-software-engineering) - [How software is steering vehicle technology](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/515-how-software-is-steering-vehicle-technology) - [Software Engineer Career: Things You Should Know](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/143-software-engineer-career-things-you-should-know) - [7 Important Tips That Every Software Developer Should Know](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/101-7-important-tips-that-every-software-developer-should-know) - [The Best Software Developer Blogs to Read](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/156-the-best-software-developer-blogs-to-read)
