This role owns the subsystem from initial concept through integration, combining structural, mechanical, and fluid considerations into a coherent design that meets program intent under aggressive development timelines. The engineer will assemble systems rapidly using a combination of commercial off-the-shelf components and targeted development, while maintaining sound engineering judgment, safety, and quality. The role requires a systems-minded engineer capable of moving from first principles through analysis to implementation, making pragmatic decisions about sourcing, integration, and manufacturability. The timeline for development is a central constraint; scope and implementation must be shaped through disciplined engineering analysis and iteration to deliver functional capability quickly without compromising system integrity., This role reports to the Founder and CEO and is based onsite in San Diego. The engineer serves as the responsible engineer for the fluid subsystem on the first product. Responsibilities include defining the initial architecture, performing and guiding key analyses, selecting and integrating components, managing subsystem budget and schedule, and ensuring the system performs as intended. The role does not initially include direct reports but requires coordination with other engineers across the vehicle as well as management of vendors and subcontractors. The position combines subsystem technical ownership with programmatic responsibility. The engineer is expected to develop the subsystem in a scrappy and iterative manner while maintaining the level of technical clarity, analytical rigor, and professionalism required to support internal decision-making and external customer confidence. ## Related Videos - [AI Agents & Agentic AI](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2017-ai-agents-agentic-ai) - [Recruiting in 2025: Will AI Help or Take Over?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1301-recruiting-in-2025-will-ai-help-or-take-over) - [Navigating the AI Revolution in Software Development](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1266-navigating-the-ai-revolution-in-software-development) - [Agile work at CARIAD – Creating a customer web application for controlling the vehicle ](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/200-agile-work-at-cariad-creating-a-customer-web-application-for-controlling-the-vehicle) - [Physical AI: The Era of Intelligent Machines](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100141-physical-ai-the-era-of-intelligent-machines) - [Remote Driving on Plant Grounds with State-of-the-Art Cloud Technologies](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/251-remote-driving-on-plant-grounds-with-state-of-the-art-cloud-technologies) ## Related Articles - [How We Built a Worry-Free System That Runs for 10+ Years – And What We’d Do Again](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/751-how-we-built-a-worry-free-system-that-runs-for-10-years-and-what-we-d-do-again) - [How software is steering vehicle technology](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/515-how-software-is-steering-vehicle-technology) - [Résumé-Driven Development: How IT trends affect the job market for software developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/59-resume-driven-development-how-it-trends-affect-the-job-market-for-software-developers) - [Is Software Engineering Over-Saturated?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/418-is-software-engineering-over-saturated) - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs) - [Why developer experience matters](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/514-why-developer-experience-matters)
