This position would be responsible for software maintenance and development. Technical knowledge would include programming in Python, knowledge of the Data Science software stack, knowledge of GitHub, and familiarity with course infrastructure. This position would be responsible for supporting and training instructors, administrative staff, students on course staff, and enrolled students who all interact with the teaching stack software. This role would create staff resilience to support key elements of course infrastructure across classes and time, since students on course staff may change each semester. The Data Science Undergraduate Major Advisor role involves a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for an academic department/school/college or organization. The incumbent will assist the Dean/Chair, faculty, and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, visa/immigration matters, the evaluation and awarding of fellowships and block grant funds, student orientation and events, career counseling, and related programs. Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: 8/24/26 - Open until filled Responsibilities 60% Academic Advising: Advises undergraduates on course selection, program policies and requirements, admission to the major and minor, and fulfilling requirements for graduation through a range of methods including in-person appointments, drop-ins, and electronic communication. Using a thorough knowledge of curricular and extracurricular options, advises students on a wide range of paths to complete degree requirements and achieve intellectual and career goals. Serves as a resource to undergraduate students on Data Science faculty, academic resources, undergraduate research opportunities, mentoring, tutoring, scholarships, internships, and career planning resources; refers students appropriately to staff, faculty, and campus units for information and assistance. Assists students in identifying strengths and barriers to academic success, and in developing short- and long-term goals. Evaluates degree progress and recommends solutions to progression and requirement issues. Provides feedback and guidance to program faculty and leadership on student curricular needs. 25% Student Orientation, Recruitment and Admissions: Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps rank applicants for admissions; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits. Oversees and may conduct orientations of new students. Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the organization, or academic strategies and enrichment programs. 10% Career Counseling: Advises department/college/school students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study; advises on summer internship programs; develops and maintains a network of departments and regional firms interested in hiring summer students. 5% Professional Development: Maintains professional growth and development through attendance at training sessions, seminars, conferences, cross-campus committees, and through participation on campus-wide committees and in professional organizations. Attends and gives presentations on campus and at conferences such as UC Berkeley Stay Day, UC system-wide Academic Advising Conferences, and regional and national NACADA conferences., This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter required to report the observed or suspected abuse or neglect of children, dependent adults, or elders to designated law enforcement or social service agencies.
