Our automation investigates and remediates security events with minimal human intervention, from initial triage through eradication. We need a Software Development Manager to own the engineering backbone that makes this possible. Amazon Security's Operational Research and Development team combines Security Engineers and Software Development Engineers in a single mission: reduce time-to-resolution for security incidents through automation at every stage of the response lifecycle. The SDM will own the platform portfolio that underpins all of our automation capabilities: the workflow orchestration engine, the enrichment API layer, the knowledge graph infrastructure, and the operational tooling that keeps them running in production. In addition to the automation platform, you will be responsible for operating a broader AWS Security tools portfolio in the European Sovereign Cloud region, ensuring availability and compliance for services that require partition-eligible engineering staff., As a Software Development Manager, you will: - Lead and grow a team of Software Development Engineers responsible for the core platforms our security automation runs on - Own the technical direction, operational excellence, and delivery roadmap for multiple production services (workflow engine, API gateway, data infrastructure) - Partner daily with a Security Engineering manager who owns the security domain expertise and incident response capabilities, ensuring SDEs and SecEngs collaborate as embedded squads rather than separate silos - Drive architectural decisions that balance rapid capability delivery with long-term platform reliability at scale - Ensure operational readiness and support for security services deployed in the European Sovereign Cloud - Hire, develop, and retain strong engineers: set clear growth paths, run rigorous code reviews, and build a culture of ownership where engineers ship what they build and fix what they break - Own an on-call rotation focused on platform health and availability About the team The Operational Research team sits within AWS Security. We are a mixed team of Security Engineers and Software Development Engineers who share a single mission: make security incident response so fast and accurate that human involvement is reduced to the decisions that genuinely require judgment. Our engineers own what they build. Each person carries meaningful end-to-end ownership of production systems, from design through deployment and operational excellence. We prototype rapidly, ship iteratively, and treat every manual step in our response pipelines as a problem to solve permanently. The team values directness, intellectual honesty, and a bias toward building over discussing. We maintain a flexible, distributed working culture and core collaboration hours that respect personal time. We are intentional about building an inclusive environment where diverse backgrounds and perspectives drive better security outcomes. Whether your path to engineering management was traditional or not, what matters is your ability to grow engineers, ship reliable platforms, and partner effectively across disciplines. Diverse Experiences Amazon Security values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn't followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don't let it stop you from applying.
