You thrive in close collaboration with scientific experts and are passionate about transforming research models and prototypes into high-quality software for real-world operational use. Your strength lies in professionalising software, ensuring quality, and making research outcomes reliable and practical. Your background + A degree in Software Engineering or demonstrable experience in software engineering. + You work independently, take ownership of your work, and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams. + You are results-oriented, customer-focused, and able to adapt in a multidisciplinary environment. + You communicate clearly and can explain technical decisions in an understandable way. Required technical skills + Experience with Python and/or C++ ; experience with Java is considered an advantage. + Software development for Linux-based systems , particularly Debian and Red Hat . + Knowledge of software quality, testability, maintainability, and software testing techniques. + Experience with software parallelisation . Nice to have + Experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines . + Experience with Docker and Kubernetes . Requirements + Available for at least 32 hours per week . + Fluent in Dutch and English . + Willing to work on-site at least three days per week . + As you will be working on projects within the defence and security domain, obtaining a Certificate of No Objection (Verklaring van Geen Bezwaar - VGB) is required. ## Description As a Scientific Software Engineer , you will join the dedicated development team responsible for signature management , working closely with scientific researchers on a maritime signature management system that predicts and influences the visibility of naval vessels and their susceptibility to threats. Scientific Software Engineer Main responsibilities While the scientific team focuses on the underlying models and research, your role is to translate this knowledge into robust, maintainable, and testable software suitable for operational use on current and future naval ships. You will develop a solid understanding of the high-level concepts behind the scientific models and ensure they are effectively aligned with operational customer needs. The team follows a SAFe/Scrum-based way of working.
