More importantly, we're looking for someone who: * Has strong software engineering fundamentals and genuine technical depth * Is comfortable taking ownership without needing a large engineering team around them * Has strong PHP/Laravel experience, or the technical ability and desire to become productive with Laravel quickly * Can work confidently across both backend and frontend * Thinks about systems and architecture, not just individual features * Has strong opinions but enjoys having those opinions challenged * Understands product and commercial trade-offs * Is pragmatic-you know when something needs engineering properly and when the simplest solution is the right one * Wants to become deeply involved in one product and business, rather than moving between short-term projects AI matters here... We're particularly interested in engineers who are genuinely excited about how AI is changing software development. Using Copilot occasionally isn't really what we mean. Perhaps you're experimenting with Claude Code, coding agents, MCP, local LLMs, agentic workflows, automated testing/review, AI-assisted architecture or your own development tooling. You don't need to agree with every current trend in AI-in fact, we'd rather you had your own opinions-but we'd expect AI to have meaningfully changed the way you build software. We'd love to hear about what you've experimented with, what's worked, what hasn't, and where you think human engineering judgement still matters. The Opportunity ## Description We're working with a profitable, growing UK SaaS business to find a Senior Full Stack / Product Engineer who wants genuine ownership of a product rather than simply joining another development team. This is a small, founder-led technology business with an established product and international customer base. You'll work closely with the founder and have significant influence over technical architecture, product decisions and how the engineering function evolves. This isn't a role for someone who wants a backlog of tickets handed to them. We're looking for an experienced, opinionated engineer who enjoys understanding the problem, challenging assumptions and deciding what should be built as well as how to build it. What you'll be doing? You'll take broad ownership across the product and engineering lifecycle, including: * Building and improving customer-facing features across the full stack * Making architectural and technical decisions * Working primarily with PHP/Laravel and modern JavaScript * Contributing confidently across backend and frontend development * Working directly with the founder on product direction and priorities * Challenging requirements when you believe there's a better or simpler solution * Improving engineering practices, testing, reliability and maintainability * Using AI extensively within your software engineering workflow * Experimenting with new AI tools, agents and development approaches * Taking ideas from initial discussion through to production ## Related Videos - [Hiring AI Native Talents](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100268-hiring-ai-native-talents) - [How to add test automation to your project: The good, the bad, and the ugly](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1668-how-to-add-test-automation-to-your-project-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly) - [Developing the Backend with Stefan Lingler, CTO at Shpock](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100360-developing-the-backend-with-stefan-lingler-cto-at-shpock) - [The Laravel Core - Demystify The Beast](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/98-the-laravel-core-demystify-the-beast) - [The AI-Native Engineering Org: What’s Real, What’s Hype, What’s Next](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100004-the-ai-native-engineering-org-what-s-real-what-s-hype-what-s-next) - [SMART Test Automation - the experience of legacy transformation](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100215-smart-test-automation-the-experience-of-legacy-transformation) ## Related Articles - [What is Agentic Programming and Why Should Developers Care?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/625-what-is-agentic-programming-and-why-should-developers-care) - [Navigating the AI Shift](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/629-navigating-the-ai-shift) - [Dev Digest 121 - AI goes offline](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/456-dev-digest-121-ai-goes-offline) - [Dev Digest 137 - AI'm not sure about this](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/485-dev-digest-137-ai-m-not-sure-about-this) - [What is Software Engineering in the Age of AI?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/640-what-is-software-engineering-in-the-age-of-ai) - [Dev Digest 120 - Apple and peers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/455-dev-digest-120-apple-and-peers)
