The role sits at SFIA Level 4: the individual works under general direction, uses discretion in resolving problems, plans and monitors their own work (and may guide junior colleagues informally), and understands how their work contributes to broader team and organisational objectives., * Design, develop, test, and maintain Back End services and REST/GraphQL APIs using Java/Spring Boot (or equivalent modern Back End stack). * Contribute to system architecture and data model design in collaboration with senior/lead engineers. * Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code following TDD/BDD practices and team coding standards. * Participate in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback. * Integrate Back End services with databases (relational and NoSQL), messaging/event systems, and third-party APIs. * Build, extend, and operate agentic AI workflows - integrating LLM-based agents and tools into Back End systems for automation, orchestration, and decision support. * Support CI/CD pipelines, containerised deployments, and cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure) for services owned by the team. * Diagnose and resolve production issues, contributing to monitoring, logging, and observability practices. * Document technical designs, APIs, and agent workflows clearly for other engineers and stakeholders. * Work closely with QA, DevOps, and product teams within an Agile/Scrum delivery model. Technical Skills Core Backend * Languages: Java 11/17/21 (or later), with working knowledge of Kotlin/Scala a plus * Frameworks: Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Hibernate/JPA * APIs: REST, GraphQL, OpenAPI/Swagger * Databases: PostgreSQL, Oracle, MongoDB, Elasticsearch * Messaging/Streaming: Kafka, RabbitMQ, event-driven architecture * Testing: JUnit, Mockito, TDD/BDD, Cucumber * Build & CI/CD: Maven/Gradle, Git, Jenkins/GitHub Actions/GitLab CI * Cloud & Containers: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, EKS, RDS, IAM) or Azure, Docker, Kubernetes * Monitoring: Grafana, Prometheus ## Related Videos - [On a Secret Mission: Developing AI Agents](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1510-on-a-secret-mission-developing-ai-agents) - [Leveraging Real time data in FSIs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/806-leveraging-real-time-data-in-fsis) - [How Unit Testing Saved My Career](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1642-how-unit-testing-saved-my-career) - [How a Small Team Shrank a Microsoft Monorepo by 94%](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1236-how-a-small-team-shrank-a-microsoft-monorepo-by-94) - [NoSQL Data Modeling for Front-end Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/297-nosql-data-modeling-for-front-end-developers) - [From boy scouting to redrawing the landscape](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1140-from-boy-scouting-to-redrawing-the-landscape) ## Related Articles - [What Are Large Language Models?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/304-what-are-large-language-models) - [From Prototype to Production: Build AI Agents with This Free 4-Course Learning Path](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/655-from-prototype-to-production-build-ai-agents-with-this-free-4-course-learning-path) - [What is Agentic Programming and Why Should Developers Care?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/625-what-is-agentic-programming-and-why-should-developers-care) - [13 AI Tools You Have to Try](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/219-13-ai-tools-you-have-to-try) - [Dev Digest 210: AI Agents Are Go!
