The leader will help the Systems organization balance near-term program execution with long-range platform thinking, ensuring innovations are designed for reuse, scalable interfaces, and future product applicability as new therapies, devices, and ecosystem needs emerge. The day to day of this role will focus on function strategy, talent development of a team of 10 to 20 engineers including a manager, and process/knowledge management. This role's functional strategy focus will span early concept generation / feasibility, system architecture, AI Fluency, and cross-program consistency., * Lead an organization of systems engineering leaders and technical contributors, including one or more managers as applicable, to achieve Systems organization objectives and strengthen capabilities, industry awareness, and organizational maturity. * Serve as a key member of the EPT CRM Systems staff and represent the innovation & AI functional initiatives across program, functional, enterprise, and technology-development forums. * Develop and maintain a robust talent pipeline spanning the multiple program roles held by the organization. * Develop and mentor engineers, managers, and project teams with pragmatic, risk-informed feedback that mature system development, reduce technical uncertainty, and improve execution quality. * Influence Business Unit (BU) R&D leaders, R&T innovation directors, program leaders, and functional partners to align Systems priorities with business objectives, patient/customer needs, technology roadmaps, product-platform evolution, intelligent reuse, and long-range portfolio needs. * Terminology: Introduce illustrative metaphors into the Systems' communications culture to facilitate the rapid understanding of complexity, quality, or completeness of a given topic under discussion. Balanced Innovation & Product-Platform Strategy * Terminology: The Balanced Innovation strategy focuses on future innovative solutions that are integrated across the platform and products when applicable. * Develop and maintain the vision and roadmap for Balanced Innovation strategy within the Systems organization, ensuring innovations are intentionally designed to accommodate future products and platform extensions. * Work across product platforms and programs to identify, prioritize, and govern a backlog of architecture, interface, reuse, and simplification opportunities. * Proactively drive cross-program consistency for end-user interfaces, communication, instrumentation, firmware/software interfaces, data and diagnostic interfaces, and related architecture patterns where reuse is appropriate. AI Adoption & Digital Engineering Enablement * Increase responsible AI adoption in Systems Engineering workflows with emphasis on speed, efficiency, quality, knowledge reuse, and improved engineering decision support. * Translate AI opportunities into practical, measurable workflow improvements, including priority use cases, training needs, adoption measures, and governance considerations for the Systems organization. * Partner with digital engineering, Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), IT, compliance, and functional leaders to ensure AI-enabled capabilities are useful, compliant, secure, and trusted by engineering teams. * Target priority workflows such as requirements development, architecture knowledge retrieval, Integration Verification & Validation (IVV) planning, design review preparation, model usage, documentation, and knowledge capture for measurable efficiency, quality, and decision-support gains. System Development Participation * Own or co-own the Systems Development strategy and ensure it is translated into clear objectives, backlogs, measures, and operating mechanisms. * Further the practical impact of MBSE and related development-efficiency initiatives by strengthening their use in requirements, design, architecture, testing, cross-functional work, and governed product-system knowledge repositories. * Work closely with Project Management Office (PMO), business process owners, compliance process owners, and Solution Definition stakeholders to ensure scalable, rigorous, and efficient front-end execution. * Review and advise on Systems Engineering schedules, design initiation readiness, and execution plans for completeness, feasibility, and risk visibility. * Work with financial partners to effectively deploy capital to meet the skills development and engagement needs of the department members, and to acquire & maintain resources to efficiently execute on programs. Knowledge Management, IP & Culture * Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, pragmatism, technical curiosity, balanced risk-taking, and knowledge sharing across Systems Engineering and partner organizations. * Create mechanisms for capturing, curating, and reusing architecture knowledge, AI examples, technical rationale, lessons learned, reusable patterns, and expert guidance. * Drive efforts to encourage and capture intellectual property from the Systems Engineering organization. * Enable effective expert knowledge transfer through forums, communities of practice, peer pods, design reviews, and reusable artifacts. What Success Looks Like * Balanced Innovation priorities are visible, governed, and connected to platform needs rather than isolated to a single product or program. * Systems architecture decisions increasingly reduce unnecessary variation and enable future product cadence, reuse, and efficient integration. * AI adoption improves selected Systems Engineering workflows with measurable efficiency, quality, or knowledge-sharing benefit. * MBSE and digital engineering capabilities become easier to use as practical backbones for requirements, design, testing, and cross-functional collaboration. * Program teams receive pragmatic systems engineering guidance that improves front-end clarity, transition readiness, schedule feasibility, and risk burn-down. * The organization develops deeper talent capability in system architecture, AI-enabled workflows, concept definition, and cross-platform technical leadership. ## Related Videos - [Model Based Systems Engineering in an Agile Product Development Process](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/68-model-based-systems-engineering-in-an-agile-product-development-process) - [The Neuroscience of Engineering Culture: Why Your Team’s Brains Are Crashing](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2049-the-neuroscience-of-engineering-culture-why-your-team-s-brains-are-crashing) - [Same Tower, New Confusion: The Tower of Babel 2.0](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100101-same-tower-new-confusion-the-tower-of-babel-2-0) - [Playing Pong on a shoulder press machine](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100140-playing-pong-on-a-shoulder-press-machine) - [Breaking the Hardware Mindset: Overcoming Barriers to System-Level Innovation](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1635-breaking-the-hardware-mindset-overcoming-barriers-to-system-level-innovation) - [What If We Designed Employee Experience Like a Customer Journey?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1824-what-if-we-designed-employee-experience-like-a-customer-journey) ## Related Articles - [What Jobs Can You Get with a Software Engineering Degree?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/398-what-jobs-can-you-get-with-a-software-engineering-degree) - [The 12 Best Jobs for Software Engineers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/401-the-12-best-jobs-for-software-engineers) - [Top-Paying Tech Jobs (with Salaries)](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/372-top-paying-tech-jobs-with-salaries) - [From developer to manager – what does it take to become an engineering manager?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/42-from-developer-to-manager-what-does-it-take-to-become-an-engineering-manager) - [How to Become an AI Engineer](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/331-how-to-become-an-ai-engineer) - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs)
