Core stack is C / C++ on microcontrollers with CAN, and it's a genuinely hands-on role, so as much time with the hardware as at the keyboard. Commutable from across Merseyside and Cheshire. Day to day you'd be building and maintaining firmware, then testing and commissioning it yourself on rigs and in situ, working alongside a senior developer. It suits an established embedded engineer who wants to go deeper on CAN and low-level hardware work rather than sit at a desk full-time. What they're looking for * Several years of commercial embedded firmware in C / C++ on microcontrollers, with a track record of delivery. * Working knowledge of CAN and the appetite to build real depth in it. * Genuinely comfortable with hardware: wiring, harnesses, debugging and commissioning out in the field. * Solid embedded fundamentals: interrupts, timers, serial protocols (SPI, I2C, UART). * Able to read schematics and use debug tools (scope, logic analyser, CAN tools), and work closely with hardware engineers. * Full UK driving licence. Nice to have J1939, LIN or UDS; RTOS; industrial or embedded experience in a hardware-heavy sector; a relevant engineering or computing degree, or equivalent experience. Practicalities Site-based with some hybrid flex, but the hardware and test kit live on site, so plan on roughly three days a week in. Not a remote role. ## Related Videos - [More efficient software for more efficient microchips](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1164-more-efficient-software-for-more-efficient-microchips) - [Modern C#: A Dive into the Community's Most Loved new Features.](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/693-modern-c-a-dive-into-the-community-s-most-loved-new-features) - [Using AI Without Losing Your Skills](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2045-using-ai-without-losing-your-skills) - [Playing Pong on a shoulder press machine](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100140-playing-pong-on-a-shoulder-press-machine) - [When Agents Meet Legacy: Never Change a Running System](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100320-when-agents-meet-legacy-never-change-a-running-system) - [Functional Programming in C++](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1409-functional-programming-in-c) ## Related Articles - [How software is steering vehicle technology](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/515-how-software-is-steering-vehicle-technology) - [Is Software Engineering Hard?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/448-is-software-engineering-hard) - [Where to Find Entry-Level Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/397-where-to-find-entry-level-software-engineering-jobs) - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs) - [Where To Find Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/396-where-to-find-software-engineering-jobs) - [What is Software Engineering?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/289-what-is-software-engineering)
