This is first and foremost a leadership role: you will spend more of your time on people, coordination and decision-making than on hands-on technical work, while drawing on your own senior technical background to support, challenge and develop the team. Your day is built around the team rather than a single piece of technical work. You will allocate work, manage priorities and resolve conflicts, support engineers through technical and professional challenges, and make sure standards and ways of working stay consistent across the team. You will represent your domain in conversations with Customers, Project Managers and other discipline leads, and you will input to hiring, promotion and development decisions. You will stay close enough to the technical detail to ask the right questions and challenge the team's thinking, without needing to be the one solving every problem yourself. How You'll Make an Impact * Run day-to-day operations for the team, allocating work and managing priorities and conflicts, and support resourcing and planning conversations, balancing team capacity against project demand. * Own domain capability and standards, ensuring consistent ways of working across the team, and contribute to broader engineering leadership activity, including consistency across teams, shared standards and continuous improvement. * Coach and support engineers' technical and professional development, identifying capability gaps and shaping development plans, and provide input to hiring and promotion decisions, helping build and sustain a strong, well-rounded team. * Act as the senior point of contact for your domain in project, customer and cross-discipline discussions, communicating clearly and confidently with engineers, customers, suppliers and senior stakeholders, adapting style to the audience. * Challenge and quality-check the team's technical work, using your own experience to ask the right questions rather than doing the work yourself, and escalate and resolve risks and issues that affect the team's ability to deliver, raising these early with Project Managers and stakeholders. * Own digitalisation and continuous improvement for your domain, identifying opportunities to phase out manual processes, adopt new tools and lift engineering efficiency and quality; sponsor adoption of new engineering tools and digital workflows within the team, balancing pace of change against delivery commitments; and track and report on efficiency, quality and capability improvements within your domain, using these to inform resourcing, training and process decisions . ## Related Videos - [Transforming Task Management: Integrating Camunda with Scalable Frontend Solutions](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1433-transforming-task-management-integrating-camunda-with-scalable-frontend-solutions) - [What makes Cybersecurity different for critical infrastructure?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/571-what-makes-cybersecurity-different-for-critical-infrastructure) - [Times of (climate) crisis - How and why sustainable software is a must!](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/988-times-of-climate-crisis-how-and-why-sustainable-software-is-a-must) - [10M Data Records Lost, Underwater Computing, and Psychedelic Fish - Matthias Geniar](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1908-10m-data-records-lost-underwater-computing-and-psychedelic-fish-matthias-geniar) - [What’s New with Windows Power-User Tools](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2069-what-s-new-with-windows-power-user-tools) - [Kettle and Pot or Peas in a Pod?
