Taste, ship rate, and judgment matter more than seniority. * You ship. GitHub, side projects, work history with things you can actually point to. * You're fluent in modern AI development - OpenAI, Anthropic, RAG, agents, MCP, prompt engineering used as tools to build real things, not as buzzwords. * You're a generalist with depth. Comfortable across Python, JS/TS, cloud, APIs, databases, and front-end when needed. You unblock yourself. * You care about craft - documentation, error handling, edge cases, longevity. * You collaborate well. This is a small company. You'll work with developers, operations, finance, and leadership directly. You can adjust your communication for each. * You're coachable and you coach others. Bonus points * Fintech, lending, or financial services background * Hands-on experience with Claude Code, MCP servers, or modern agentic frameworks * Track record of building internal tools that people actually use * Comfort working alongside non-developers who are also building things ## Description Every fintech is hiring for AI right now. Most of them want another engineer to slot into someone else's roadmap., This role is different. Alternative Funding Group is a profitable, fast-moving fintech in the small business funding space, and we're hiring a dedicated AI Developer to lead the technical side of our AI initiatives. You'll work closely with existing developers and leadership to take projects that are already in motion, strengthen them, and build the next wave properly. This isn't a "do whatever you want" role - and frankly, you shouldn't want that. It's a focused, high-impact position with real autonomy, real accountability, and a direct line to the decision-makers shaping the company's direction. Why this role is different Most AI jobs fall into two buckets: * Big company: Great pay, but you're a small piece of a giant machine. * Early-stage startup: Real ownership, but runway anxiety and uncertain equity. This is the third option: a profitable, established business with real revenue and real customers, investing seriously in AI. You'll have meaningful influence on the technical direction, you'll work directly with leadership, and you'll see your work shipped and used - without the chaos of a 10-person startup or the molasses of a 500-person org. What you'll do in your first 90 days * First 30 days: Get oriented. Understand the existing systems, meet every team, and identify where the highest-leverage opportunities are. * Days 30-60: Propose a technical roadmap with leadership. Ship at least one high-impact tool end-to-end. Begin establishing standards for AI development across the company. * Days 60-90: Execute against the roadmap. Document standards. Start improving the work of others who are building AI tools without formal engineering backgrounds. What the role looks like long-term * Build AI tools and agents that move the needle - real problems, real users, real impact measured in hours saved and dollars unlocked. * Contribute to architecture decisions alongside existing developers and leadership. * Ship reliably - move fast, but build things that hold up. * Raise the engineering bar across the company. * Grow with the function as our AI work expands. Tech you'll work with * Languages: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript * AI: OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), RAG, agentic frameworks, MCP * Cloud and infra: AWS, Google Workspace APIs * Web stack: React/Next.js, Supabase, Vercel * Other: Git, modern CI/CD, SaaS integrations, * Real projects you'll see through from idea to production * Direct access to leadership - short feedback loops, real decisions made quickly * A serious tooling budget - best-in-class AI tools, infrastructure, and hardware * A company that ships - no theater, no committees, no quarterly delays * Long-term trajectory as the AI function grows, * "How many years of experience do you have building applications with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar)?" * Are you currently authorized to start work within 4 weeks of receiving an offer? * Briefly describe one AI tool, agent, or automation you've personally built. What did it do and what stack did you use? Ability to Commute: * Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309 (Required) ## Related Videos - [Innovating Developer Tools with AI: Insights from GitHub Next](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1268-innovating-developer-tools-with-ai-insights-from-github-next) - [WeAreDevelopers LIVE – AI, Freelancing, Keeping Up with Tech and More](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1786-wearedevelopers-live-ai-freelancing-keeping-up-with-tech-and-more) - [How a Small Team Shrank a Microsoft Monorepo by 94%](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1236-how-a-small-team-shrank-a-microsoft-monorepo-by-94) - [Hiring AI Native Talents](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100268-hiring-ai-native-talents) - [Bringing AI Model Testing and Prompt Management to Your Codebase with GitHub Models](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1536-bringing-ai-model-testing-and-prompt-management-to-your-codebase-with-github-models) - [Git for Code Reviews](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/429-git-for-code-reviews) ## Related Articles - [Navigating the AI Shift](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/629-navigating-the-ai-shift) - [What is Agentic Programming and Why Should Developers Care?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/625-what-is-agentic-programming-and-why-should-developers-care) - [Dev Digest 121 - AI goes offline](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/456-dev-digest-121-ai-goes-offline) - [What is Software Engineering in the Age of AI?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/640-what-is-software-engineering-in-the-age-of-ai) - [Dev Digest 132 - Binging WADFlix?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/473-dev-digest-132-binging-wadflix) - [Dev Digest 137 - AI'm not sure about this](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/485-dev-digest-137-ai-m-not-sure-about-this)
