While this is not a hands-on coding role, engineers respect you as a technologist, not only as a manager. * You have experience defining systems-level architectural and technology vision for a team or domain, and executing on that vision. * You have working fluency in order management, billing, revenue, or closely related commercial and financial-systems domains - enough to know what "correct" looks like in a revenue context. * You have experience owning internally-facing platforms and/or shared services consumed by other engineering teams. * You are comfortable leading in a matrixed, pod-based model - owning people and standards while your engineers deliver inside cross-functional pods. * You have experience in healthcare, financial services, or other highly regulated fields. * You are comfortable making hard decisions and moving quickly to communicate the trade-offs you've made. * You are highly organized and reliable, bring clarity and structure to complexity, and can plan and communicate project status and trade-offs with executives. * Bonus points for experience with revenue-enabling or lead-to-cash systems specifically, or for running shared platform capabilities such as auth or identity as internal products. ## Description As a Director of Software Engineering , you'll define and lead the engineering function behind our custom-built, internally-facing platforms, the software that powers our lead-to-cash flow, from billing and revenue enablement to the shared platform services other product teams build on. You'll own the people, the standards, and the technical direction for this domain, acting as both the senior technical voice your teams rely on and the leader who sets where they're headed. You'll lead through your engineering managers and technical leads rather than as an individual contributor , and you'll be instrumental in establishing how a domain like this operates inside a matrixed, pod-based delivery model. With your help, we'll have a stable, scalable, and fit-for-purpose foundation to support Datavant's journey. In this role you will: * Build, grow, and lead a world-class team of software engineers, engineering managers, and technical leads responsible for our custom applications - owning hiring, growth, performance, and the technical bar. * Set the engineering standards and technology direction for the domain: development practices, technology and architecture choices, quality and testing standards, and how we manage our repositories and technical debt. * Own our shared platform services - for example, enterprise authentication delivered as a service that other product teams consume rather than rebuild - treating them as products in their own right, with internal engineering leaders as your customers. * Be accountable for fit-for-purpose delivery : that what your team builds holds up in production, meets the need it was built for, and doesn't create tomorrow's rework. * Partner with product, architecture, security, and compliance , and commit engineers into cross-functional pods to deliver value-stream outcomes - starting with Order-to-Cash and Lead-to-Contract - that no single team owns end to end. * Serve as a senior technical advisor and sounding board to your teams and to the pods that draw on them - engaging on architecture, trade-offs, and design, not just status. * Champion the software solutions, processes, and standards that raise our quality bar over time and carry the business into the future. ## Related Videos - [From Code to Culture: Why Leadership Determines Software Quality](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1998-from-code-to-culture-why-leadership-determines-software-quality) - [Resolving technical debts in software architecture](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1680-resolving-technical-debts-in-software-architecture) - [Unleashing the Power of Developers: Why Cybersecurity is the Missing Piece?!?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/712-unleashing-the-power-of-developers-why-cybersecurity-is-the-missing-piece) - [Rethinking Intelligence: AI, Accessibility, and the Future of Inclusive Work - Artur Ortega](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1377-rethinking-intelligence-ai-accessibility-and-the-future-of-inclusive-work-artur-ortega) - [Shipping Quality Software In Hostile Environments ](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/219-shipping-quality-software-in-hostile-environments) - [Your Code as a Crime Scene](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1342-your-code-as-a-crime-scene) ## Related Articles - [Highest Paying Tech Companies for Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/220-highest-paying-tech-companies-for-developers) - [What is Software Engineering?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/289-what-is-software-engineering) - [How to Answer the Interview Question: “Why Do You Want to Be a Software Engineer?”](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/392-how-to-answer-the-interview-question-why-do-you-want-to-be-a-software-engineer) - [The 12 Best Jobs for Software Engineers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/401-the-12-best-jobs-for-software-engineers) - [Is Software Engineering Hard?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/448-is-software-engineering-hard) - [How We Built a Worry-Free System That Runs for 10+ Years – And What We’d Do Again](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/751-how-we-built-a-worry-free-system-that-runs-for-10-years-and-what-we-d-do-again)
