Previous experience in highly regulated industries with strict requirements around data privacy preferred. * Expertise with Java, Spring Boot, and reactive programming in large-scaled production environments. * Experience designing, building, and operating GraphQL APIs, including schema design, authorization, performance optimization, pagination, caching strategies, and resolver/federation patterns. * Experience with event-driven architecture and Apache Kafka in production: topics, partitions, consumer groups, exactly-once processing, schema registry/Avro/Protobuf, dead-letter queues, and integration/messaging patterns. * Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL strongly preferred), NoSQL, caching strategies (Redis), and thoughtful data modeling for distributed, eventually consistent systems. * Ability to design offline-first or hybrid online/offline mobile architectures, including robust synchronization strategies, conflict resolution, and Backend-for-Frontend patterns. * Knowledge of security architecture in distributed systems and resilience/observability patterns. * Experience with containerization, container orchestration, and modern cloud-native deployment practices on AWS. * Experience with Infrastructure as Code and familiarity with GitOps workflows. * Experience rapidly prototyping architectural options and making pragmatic, data-driven technology decisions. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. ## Description Design and evolve complex, distributed software systems, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and aligned with the company's strategic goals. The base salary range for this position is $115,690-$181,798. Actual pay will be determined based upon a candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, geographic location, and may include other job-related factors such as certification(s), professional licensure, or internal equity considerations. Responsibilities: * Partner with engineering and product teams to define scalable, maintainable microservices architecture using domain-driven design and distributed systems principles. * Design and implement event-driven architectures with Apache Kafka (or similar), including asynchronous messaging, event sourcing, sagas, schema management, and service integration. * Define architecture for mobile and backend integration, including data modeling, offline synchronization, conflict resolution, BFF patterns, and API design. * Standardize containerization with Docker across development, staging, and production environments. * Deploy and manage applications on Kubernetes to ensure scalability, resilience, and high availability. * Design and deploy cloud-native solutions on AWS using services such as EKS, EC2, S3, RDS/Aurora, Lambda, and API Gateway. * Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or AWS CDK/CloudFormation to automate provisioning and support GitOps. * Establish best practices for security, resilience, observability, and operational excellence across microservices and event-driven systems. * Ensure architectures meet security, compliance, and HIPAA requirements through encryption, access controls, audit logging, and secure configurations. * Prototype and validate architectural solutions through spikes and proof of concepts to reduce risk and align with business goals. * Lead architecture reviews, threat modeling, and code reviews to ensure architectural standards, performance, and security. * Create and maintain architectural documentation, including ADRs, C4 diagrams, data flow diagrams, runbooks, and technical guidance. * Collaborate closely with other internal stakeholders to ensure alignment on technical strategies, roadmaps, and objectives. * Contribute to technology evaluations, tool selection, and the ongoing evolution of the platform toward well-structured, domain-drive, and event-driven microservices. * Support onboarding and enablement of engineering teams on architectural patters, tools, and standards adopted by the platform. ## Related Videos - [Leveraging Real time data in FSIs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/806-leveraging-real-time-data-in-fsis) - [Next Level Enterprise Architecture: Modular, Flexible, Scalable, Multichannel and AI-Ready?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1017-next-level-enterprise-architecture-modular-flexible-scalable-multichannel-and-ai-ready) - [Reducing LLM Calls with Vector Search Patterns - Raphael De Lio (Redis)](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1714-reducing-llm-calls-with-vector-search-patterns-raphael-de-lio-redis) - [From event streaming to event sourcing 101](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/91-from-event-streaming-to-event-sourcing-101) - [Accelerating Authentication Architecture: Taking Passwordless to the Next Level](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/733-accelerating-authentication-architecture-taking-passwordless-to-the-next-level) - [Introducing JSON Structure](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100219-introducing-json-structure) ## Related Articles - [How We Built a Worry-Free System That Runs for 10+ Years – And What We’d Do Again](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/751-how-we-built-a-worry-free-system-that-runs-for-10-years-and-what-we-d-do-again) - [Highest Paying Tech Companies for Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/220-highest-paying-tech-companies-for-developers) - [Top Must-Visit Developer Conferences in the US in 2026](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/679-top-must-visit-developer-conferences-in-the-us-in-2026) - [Is Software Engineering Over-Saturated?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/418-is-software-engineering-over-saturated) - [What Are The Top Skills Required For Azure Developers?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/77-what-are-the-top-skills-required-for-azure-developers) - [Why Attend a Developer Event in 2026?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/688-why-attend-a-developer-event-in-2026)
