The role ensures that the scientific and operational software supporting hydrographic surveys, oceanographic research, fisheries surveys, and other vessel-based missions remains reliable, secure, integrated, and responsive to evolving mission needs. The position serves as a critical link between marine operations and the technology that supports them, translating the needs of Marine Operations personnel, scientists, engineers, Electronics Technicians, and other stakeholders into effective software and data solutions. The Software Developer IV - Marine Operations (MO) provides the technical direction necessary to modernize and sustain applications while addressing the unique challenges of distributed shipboard and shoreside environments, including scientific data workflows and integration between vessels, shore facilities, and enterprise systems. Success in this role means Marine Operations teams have dependable mission applications and access to the scientific and operational data they need, when and where they need it. You will strengthen software quality and operational reliability, reduce technology and integration risk, improve the flow of data between shipboard and shoreside environments, and guide the continued modernization of software capabilities. Ultimately, the position helps ensure that technology enables, rather than constrains, the organization's ability to execute critical research, survey, and operational missions at sea. What You Will Do in This Role The Software Developer IV - Marine Operations (MO) provides hands-on technical leadership for the development, modernization, integration, and sustainment of software supporting research and survey fleet and Marine Operations Centers. Responsibilities include: * Serve as the senior technical lead for Marine Operations software development, modernization, integration, and sustainment, providing hands-on technical leadership while solving complex software, integration, and operational challenges. * Lead the architecture, design, development, integration, testing, deployment, modernization, and maintenance of scientific, operational, data-intensive, and mission-support applications. * Gather and translate requirements from Marine Operations personnel, scientists, engineers, Electronics Technicians, and other stakeholders into technical solutions, software requirements, architectures, interfaces, and implementation approaches. * Develop and support applications using C#, .NET/.NET Core, ASP.NET, JavaScript, SQL, Visual Studio, and relational database technologies, while providing technical direction to software and database developers and coordinating development priorities. * Architect and integrate databases, APIs, data services, and application interfaces supporting scientific and operational workflows, including the secure and reliable transfer of data across shipboard, shoreside, and enterprise environments. * Lead software testing and quality assurance, including unit, system, functional, interface, regression, performance, integration/interoperability, and operational-user testing; conduct design reviews, code walkthroughs, test-plan evaluations, and technical documentation reviews. * Manage source-code control, software configuration, change management, release management, quality assurance, and deployment, while applying Agile and CMMI-aligned software development practices and applicable IT, cybersecurity, configuration management, and change management requirements. * Troubleshoot mission-critical applications, software defects, database issues, and integration challenges, providing Tier 1-3 support for custom-developed systems and collaborating with technical and operational stakeholders to modernize applications, improve system reliability, reduce integration risk, and enhance the flow of scientific and operational data. ## Related Videos - [Grappling With Clunky Old Software?
