You will work across a range of ecommerce clients, designing, building, launching and continually improving high-quality Shopify and Shopify Plus solutions. This is broader than a storefront or theme-development role: you will work across customer-facing experiences, server-side services, APIs, integrations and data flows, helping to understand client requirements, recommend pragmatic technical approaches and take responsibility for the quality of what we deliver. The Shopify Developer is responsible for delivering robust, maintainable and high-performing solutions across the full Shopify technology stack. The role combines hands-on frontend and backend development with technical discovery, estimation, API and integration design, data modelling, quality assurance and production support. You will collaborate with developers, technical leads, designers, delivery managers and clients to turn commercial and functional requirements into effective Shopify solutions. The following should give you a flavour of how you will be spending your time. Your focus will shift from week-to-week, but it gives an idea of what is expected from the role: Full-Stack Shopify Development * Build and maintain Shopify and Shopify Plus solutions across storefronts, custom applications, services and integrations. * Develop bespoke themes and extend existing themes using Liquid, JSON templates, sections, blocks, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, while contributing to backend services where required. * Translate designs and functional requirements into responsive, accessible and performant ecommerce experiences. * Create flexible, reusable frontend components and backend services that are well structured, testable and maintainable. Shopify Solutions & Integrations * Design and build robust integrations between Shopify and third-party platforms using REST, GraphQL, webhooks and asynchronous data flows. * Work confidently with Shopify data and APIs covering products, collections, customers, orders, metafields and metaobjects, including authentication, data transformation and error handling. * Assess when a Shopify-native feature, established app or bespoke solution is the most appropriate approach. * Implement Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility, Shopify Flow and Markets where appropriate. * Support migrations and replatforming projects onto Shopify, including data, content and integration considerations. Quality, Delivery & Collaboration * Improve storefront performance, accessibility, SEO and overall technical quality. * Use Git, Shopify CLI and agreed development and deployment workflows consistently. * Review code, contribute to technical standards and help other developers deliver maintainable solutions. * Estimate development work, contribute to technical discovery and communicate risks, dependencies and options clearly. Live Support & Client Engagement * Diagnose and resolve issues across existing Shopify implementations and live ecommerce sites. * Support projects through development, QA, launch and post-launch optimisation. * Work directly with clients where appropriate to understand requirements and explain technical solutions in plain language. Platform Development & Continuous Improvement * Keep up to date with changes to Shopify and recommend capabilities that could benefit our clients. * Contribute to shared patterns, tooling, documentation and development practices across the Commerce Technology team. * Build or extend custom Shopify applications and explore headless commerce, server-side services and enterprise integrations where appropriate. * Take ownership of delivered work and help ensure it remains understandable, testable and maintainable by others. ## Related Videos - [Coffee with Developers: David Heinemeier Hansson](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/875-coffee-with-developers-david-heinemeier-hansson) - [How a Small Team Shrank a Microsoft Monorepo by 94%](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1236-how-a-small-team-shrank-a-microsoft-monorepo-by-94) - [The Resilience of the World Wide Web](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1281-the-resilience-of-the-world-wide-web) - [Modern Headless Commerce with Vendure](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/489-modern-headless-commerce-with-vendure) - [Always on the Right Track with Rails with Eileen Uchitelle, Senior System Engineer at GitHub](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100358-always-on-the-right-track-with-rails-with-eileen-uchitelle-senior-system-engineer-at-github) - [Git for Code Reviews](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/429-git-for-code-reviews) ## Related Articles - [Dev Digest 120 - Apple and peers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/455-dev-digest-120-apple-and-peers) - [Dev Digest 121 - AI goes offline](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/456-dev-digest-121-ai-goes-offline) - [Fullstack Developer Salary UK](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/251-fullstack-developer-salary-uk) - [Dev Digest 133 - Back to Front](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/474-dev-digest-133-back-to-front) - [Web Development Best Practices: What The Data Tells us](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/84-web-development-best-practices-what-the-data-tells-us) - [Frontend Developer Salary in The UK](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/233-frontend-developer-salary-in-the-uk)
