This role sits at the intersection of engineering and the business - you'll partner directly with Manufacturing, Engineering, Finance, Supply Chain, and Operations to make sure design decisions reflect real commercial trade-offs, not just technical ideals. You'll work across mechanical, electrical, product, and structural design disciplines to push rack density and power delivery further while keeping build and operating costs in check, and you'll be the person in the room translating between design engineers and business stakeholders so every site delivers the best possible economics., * Design Optimization: lead trade-off analysis across space, power density, and cost for new data center designs, identifying opportunities to increase compute per rack and per square foot without compromising reliability * Business Partnership: work directly with Finance, Engineering, and Supply Chain to translate commercial requirements - cost targets, delivery timelines, customer commitments - into concrete design specifications * Power & Cooling Strategy: partner with electrical and mechanical engineering teams to evaluate power distribution, cooling architecture (air, liquid, immersion), and their impact on achievable rack density * Cost Modeling: build and maintain models comparing design alternatives on total installed cost and cost per kW, per rack, and per square foot, giving leadership a clear basis for design decisions * Standardization & Reuse: develop repeatable design standards and reference architectures that can be deployed across sites, reducing engineering rework and accelerating time to build * Vendor & Technology Evaluation: assess new data center technologies (power delivery, cooling, rack/enclosure systems) for their potential to improve density, cost, or deployment speed * Cross-Functional Design Reviews: run design review sessions with Engineering, Operations, and business stakeholders to validate that designs meet both technical requirements and commercial targets before they're locked ## Related Videos - [How to build a sovereign European AI compute infrastructure](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1102-how-to-build-a-sovereign-european-ai-compute-infrastructure) - [The Sustainability Race: AI's Promises, Pitfalls and Potential](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100155-the-sustainability-race-ai-s-promises-pitfalls-and-potential) - [Edit Your Future: Queerverse Radical AI](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/909-edit-your-future-queerverse-radical-ai) - [AI Factories at Scale](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1139-ai-factories-at-scale) - [Building the Nervous System of AI - Michael Kagan (NVIDIA)](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2133-building-the-nervous-system-of-ai-michael-kagan-nvidia) - [AI is dead, long live AK](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1093-ai-is-dead-long-live-ak) ## Related Articles - [Best US AI Conferences for CTOs in 2026: Build vs. Buy, Vendor Evaluation, and Peer Intelligence](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/736-best-us-ai-conferences-for-ctos-in-2026-build-vs-buy-vendor-evaluation-and-peer-intelligence) - [How We Built a Worry-Free System That Runs for 10+ Years – And What We’d Do Again](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/751-how-we-built-a-worry-free-system-that-runs-for-10-years-and-what-we-d-do-again) - [Dev Digest 120 - Apple and peers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/455-dev-digest-120-apple-and-peers) - [Dev Digest 162: AI careers, MCP, AWS best practices & floppy sweaters](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/571-dev-digest-162-ai-careers-mcp-aws-best-practices-floppy-sweaters) - [What Makes WeAreDevelopers World Congress Different From Every Other Tech Event?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/701-what-makes-wearedevelopers-world-congress-different-from-every-other-tech-event) - [7 Cloud Computing Trends Coming in 2025 for Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/412-7-cloud-computing-trends-coming-in-2025-for-developers)
