The role will architect backend services, APIs, and integrations that govern AI-driven system behavior across the engineering workflow. The position requires hands-on technical leadership, strong proficiency in Python and TypeScript, and a track record of cross-service delivery and enforceable patterns adopted by other engineers. This is a contract to hire opportunity. Applicants must be willing and able to work on a w2 basis and convert to FTE following contract duration. For our w2 consultants, we offer a great benefits package that includes Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits, 401k with company matching, and life insurance., * 5-8 years of software engineering experience with strong proficiency in Python and TypeScript. * Advanced experience in AWS, including Lambda, Fargate, and API Gateway. * Advanced experience with Infrastructure as Code in production, including Terraform. * Proven ability to design and implement scalable backend services and APIs across service boundaries. * History of defining enforcement patterns and interface contracts consumed by other teams. * Ability to reason about cross-service dependencies, failure propagation, and contract stability. * Clear communication of defensive design principles. * Experience designing enforcement, filtering, or validation logic spanning multiple services. * Track record of defining interfaces, contracts, or patterns adopted by other engineers. * Experience with agentic workflows or multi-agent systems. * Familiarity with LLM integration patterns such as prompt injection detection, guardrail design, or output filtering. * Nice to have: experience with AWS Bedrock, guardrail configuration, AgentCore runtimes, multi-step workflow systems, or a background in platform engineering or developer tooling. ## Description * Design and deliver backend services and APIs that enforce system behavior across multiple services. * Define where and how enforcement, filtering, and validation occur within system architectures. * Build cross-service controls and establish patterns for other engineers to implement. * Instrument and improve observability across service boundaries, including structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing. * Own shared tooling and platform components with broad organizational reach. * Mentor engineers on safe design, defensive programming, and failure handling practices. ## Related Videos - [AI Driven Development](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100340-ai-driven-development) - [Infrastructure as Code: The Developer's Secret Weapon](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1221-infrastructure-as-code-the-developer-s-secret-weapon) - [The Power of Purpose: Unlocking Potential and Innovation](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1110-the-power-of-purpose-unlocking-potential-and-innovation) - [Developing the Backend with Stefan Lingler, CTO at Shpock](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100360-developing-the-backend-with-stefan-lingler-cto-at-shpock) - [The AI-Native Engineering Org: What’s Real, What’s Hype, What’s Next](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100004-the-ai-native-engineering-org-what-s-real-what-s-hype-what-s-next) - [Implementing Feature Environments with AWS and Terraform](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/531-implementing-feature-environments-with-aws-and-terraform) ## Related Articles - [How to Become an AI Engineer](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/331-how-to-become-an-ai-engineer) - [What is Software Engineering in the Age of AI?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/640-what-is-software-engineering-in-the-age-of-ai) - [Navigating the AI Shift](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/629-navigating-the-ai-shift) - [What is Agentic Programming and Why Should Developers Care?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/625-what-is-agentic-programming-and-why-should-developers-care) - [Dev Digest 137 - AI'm not sure about this](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/485-dev-digest-137-ai-m-not-sure-about-this) - [Transforming Software Development: The Role of AI and Developer Tools](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/527-transforming-software-development-the-role-of-ai-and-developer-tools)
