You will work with a small, high-impact U.S.-based team and counterparts in Japan to ensure reliability, performance, correctness, and security across live systems., Apple Silicon MacBook-as-Server Engineering * Convert MacBooks into stable, headless server nodes with standardized builds, provisioning, and lifecycle management. * Engineer power, battery, and thermal behavior for sustained workloads: * Prevent sleep and unwanted wake events. * Support lid-closed operation. * Control power state and battery health strategy. * Implement safe failure modes during power events. * Optimize storage and filesystem behavior for cache workloads: * Data and log separation, encryption, monitoring, wear, and durability considerations. * Tune network and I/O performance on macOS for server-style throughput and latency. Apple Content Edge Cache (macOS Content Caching) * Build and operate a high-throughput edge caching system using Apple's Content Caching feature. * Implement and manage: * Cache keying, TTL and validation, negative caching. * Eviction policy, cache warming and prefetch. * Request coalescing, backpressure, purge and invalidation. * Ensure correctness under real-world traffic conditions: * Range requests and partial content. * High concurrency. * Failure containment and resilience under load. * Perform edge delivery performance engineering: * TLS termination. * HTTP/2 and HTTP/3/QUIC where applicable. * Connection reuse, origin shielding, and latency reduction. * Own instrumentation and SLOs: * Cache hit rate and byte-hit ratio. * Tail latency, disk pressure, eviction churn. * Origin load and error budgets. * Manage macOS-specific operational considerations: * Predictable resource usage. * Avoid interference with other macOS services. * Maintain consistent cache behavior across OS upgrades. Containers and Runtime Optimization (macOS + Apple Silicon) * Package and operate services using containers on macOS. * Run VM-backed Linux containers where required. * Optimize performance across: * Filesystem mounts and storage access. * Networking modes. * Resource controls and scheduling. * Build speed and cold-start behavior. * Maintain security and supply chain integrity: * Image hardening. * Signing and verification. * SBOMs. * Reproducible builds and patch cadence. Apple Platform Security and Fleet Management * Harden macOS systems for edge and server usage: * FileVault strategy. * Least privilege access. * Service minimization. * Firewalling and secure remote access. * Tamper detection and audit logging integrity. * Use Apple-native security primitives where appropriate: * Secure Enclave and Keychain. * CryptoKit. * Code signing and notarization. * macOS security boundaries. * Operate fleets at scale: * Apple Business Manager. * MDM-driven configuration and policy enforcement. * OS update strategy and inventory visibility. Swift Tooling and Peripheral Workflows * Build Swift-based tooling: * macOS agents and command-line tools. * iOS companion utilities where needed. * Support platform peripheral workflows: * NFC workflows via iOS Core NFC. * Supported external readers connected to macOS nodes. * Secure credential handling and auditing. On-Device AI (Vision-Focused) * Deploy and operate on-device vision workloads using Core ML. * Optimize FastVLM-style pipelines for performance and correctness. * Support benchmarking and tuning of on-device inference. * This role does not include chat or LLM product development. ## Related Videos - [Harnessing Apple Intelligence: Live Coding with Swift for iOS](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1515-harnessing-apple-intelligence-live-coding-with-swift-for-ios) - [Xcode development redefAIned](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100195-xcode-development-redefained) - [HTTP headers that make your website go faster](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1676-http-headers-that-make-your-website-go-faster) - [Docker Compose: Rediscovered](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1978-docker-compose-rediscovered) - [Edge AI on iOS: Beyond the Cloud, Designing the Next Generation of Intelligent On-Device Apps](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100225-edge-ai-on-ios-beyond-the-cloud-designing-the-next-generation-of-intelligent-on-device-apps) - [Let your iOS app read texts](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/167-let-your-ios-app-read-texts) ## Related Articles - [Dev Digest 120 - Apple and peers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/455-dev-digest-120-apple-and-peers) - [Dev Digest 118 - not a total recall](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/452-dev-digest-118-not-a-total-recall) - [Dev Digest 121 - AI goes offline](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/456-dev-digest-121-ai-goes-offline) - [Dev Digest 123 - Easy as A, B, C1](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/459-dev-digest-123-easy-as-a-b-c1) - [Dev Digest 132 - Binging WADFlix?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/473-dev-digest-132-binging-wadflix) - [Dev Digest 134 - Where pixels sing?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/477-dev-digest-134-where-pixels-sing)
