Strong engineering fundamentals, curiosity and problem-solving ability matter more. We're looking for someone with professional experience in backend software development, integrations or automation, who is comfortable with: * PHP and Laravel * MySQL and SQL * REST APIs, HTTP and JSON * Webhooks and OAuth * Queues, scheduled jobs and background processing * Investigating issues using logs, errors and system behaviour * Git, testing and CI/CD * Safe and controlled production changes * Reading unfamiliar code and understanding how different systems fit together * Cloud infrastructure and modern deployment tooling such as AWS or Laravel Vapor * Communicating technical problems clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues Most importantly, you should enjoy turning recurring problems into permanent solutions. You'll probably enjoy this role if… You like working across systems rather than spending all your time developing isolated product features. You want to understand why something failed, rather than simply restarting it. You enjoy APIs, integrations, automation and understanding how data moves between systems. You're comfortable moving between code, logs, databases, queues and third-party systems until you understand what is actually happening. And when you find the problem, you want to fix the underlying cause rather than create another workaround. Remote working This is a remote UK-based role. You'll work closely with our software, product and operational teams, so strong communication and the ability to work effectively in a remote environment are important. ## Description Secure Screening Services is building the next stage of its technology platform, and we're looking for a Software Automation & Integration Engineer to help us connect systems, remove repetitive operational work and make our platform more reliable. This isn't a traditional feature-development role, and it isn't first-line IT support. You'll sit between software engineering, integrations and technical operations, taking ownership of the technical problems that occur at the edges of systems - APIs, webhooks, queues, background jobs, data flows and automation. If you're the sort of engineer who sees the same problem happen twice and thinks "we should engineer this out", this role could be a great fit. What you'll be doing You'll have genuine ownership across integrations, automation and technical reliability. Your work will include: * Building and maintaining integrations with external platforms * Connecting our platform with third-party providers, client systems and SaaS platforms * Automating repetitive operational processes * Monitoring APIs, integrations, queues and scheduled jobs * Investigating technical failures and recurring problems * Tracing API requests and diagnosing failed webhooks * Investigating logs, errors and unexpected data states * Building internal tools that make problems easier to diagnose and resolve * Creating reusable patterns for future integrations * Contributing to our Laravel application where integration or automation work requires it * Helping investigate technical incidents and then improving the system so the same problem is less likely to happen again The question isn't simply: "Can we automate this?" It's: "Will this remove meaningful work, reduce errors, improve service or help us scale?" Sometimes the answer will be Laravel. Sometimes it might be a lightweight service, script or workflow. We want you to use the simplest solution that remains secure, observable and maintainable. Our technology Our core stack includes: PHP / Laravel · React · MySQL · Laravel Vapor / AWS You'll also work extensively with: REST APIs · HTTP · JSON · Webhooks · OAuth · Background jobs · Queues · Scheduled jobs · SQL · Data flows We use established software engineering practices including: Git · Pull requests · Code review · Testing · CI/CD · Controlled production changes, Our engineers are encouraged to use modern AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Codex where they help produce better work or reach a solution faster. We see AI literacy as part of modern software engineering. But judgement stays with the engineer. You'll be expected to understand, review and take responsibility for everything you produce - whether AI helped create it or not. Why join Secure Screening Services? This is an opportunity to take ownership of an area that has a direct impact on how efficiently our business operates and how successfully our technology scales. Instead of repeatedly responding to the same technical problems, you'll have the opportunity to automate them, monitor them or engineer them away entirely. You'll work alongside our Software Engineers while developing specialist ownership of the integrations, automation and reliability layer around our platform. ## Related Videos - [Slopquatting, API Keys, Fun with Fonts, Recruiters vs AI and more - The Best of LIVE 2025 - Part 2](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1765-slopquatting-api-keys-fun-with-fonts-recruiters-vs-ai-and-more-the-best-of-live-2025-part-2) - [Livecoding with AI](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1201-livecoding-with-ai) - [How a Small Team Shrank a Microsoft Monorepo by 94%](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1236-how-a-small-team-shrank-a-microsoft-monorepo-by-94) - [Tips and Tricks for Working with JSON](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1229-tips-and-tricks-for-working-with-json) - [Security Pitfalls for Software Engineers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/726-security-pitfalls-for-software-engineers) - [ Evaluating AI models for code comprehension](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1462-evaluating-ai-models-for-code-comprehension) ## Related Articles - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs) - [Is Software Engineering Over-Saturated?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/418-is-software-engineering-over-saturated) - [Find a Developer Job: 12 Best Job Sites For Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/165-find-a-developer-job-12-best-job-sites-for-developers) - [Where To Find Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/396-where-to-find-software-engineering-jobs) - [The 12 Best Jobs for Software Engineers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/401-the-12-best-jobs-for-software-engineers) - [Dev Digest 121 - AI goes offline](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/456-dev-digest-121-ai-goes-offline)
