The role combines low-level bare-metal and RTOS development with embedded Linux system integration, hardware bring-up, security and validation to deliver robust, high-performance embedded systems. The ideal candidate is hands-on with microcontrollers and SoCs, comfortable with cross-toolchains, and experienced in debugging, performance tuning, and safety/compliance practices., * Lead firmware and embedded software development across bare-metal, RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS, VxWorks, ThreadX) and Embedded Linux platforms. * Design, implement and maintain device drivers and hardware abstraction layers for peripherals (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, Ethernet, GPIO, ADC, PWM, DMA). * Perform board bring-up, BSP development, bootloader integration (U-Boot) and Linux kernel configuration/porting. * Develop and maintain Yocto/Buildroot-based images, cross-compilation toolchains (GCC/Clang) and build pipelines. * Implement secure boot, OTA update mechanisms, embedded security and cryptographic features to meet product requirements. * Debug complex issues using GDB, JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes and logic analyzers; perform root-cause analysis of hardware/software interactions. * Optimize firmware for performance, memory footprint and power (low-power modes, power management techniques). * Implement robust multithreading/concurrency designs, interrupt handling and DMA-aware drivers for deterministic behavior. * Define and execute unit, integration and system-level firmware validation; drive CI/CD for automated builds and tests. * Review PCB schematics and collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure software/hardware compatibility. * Mentor and coach junior engineers, perform design reviews, and contribute to technical roadmaps and documentation. * Ensure products meet relevant safety and functional standards (ISO 26262, IEC 61508) and support static analysis/MISRA C compliance activities. ## Related Videos - [Unleashing the Full Potential of the Arm Architecture – Write Once, Deploy Anywhere](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/940-unleashing-the-full-potential-of-the-arm-architecture-write-once-deploy-anywhere) - [Prototyping with Hardware and the Web](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/651-prototyping-with-hardware-and-the-web) - [How a Small Team Shrank a Microsoft Monorepo by 94%](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1236-how-a-small-team-shrank-a-microsoft-monorepo-by-94) - [Building a hypercar from scratch](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/607-building-a-hypercar-from-scratch) - [Project Fugu: Extending the web](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/832-project-fugu-extending-the-web) - [Git for Code Reviews](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/429-git-for-code-reviews) ## Related Articles - [Is Software Engineering Over-Saturated?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/418-is-software-engineering-over-saturated) - [Where to Find Entry-Level Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/397-where-to-find-entry-level-software-engineering-jobs) - [Is Software Engineering Hard?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/448-is-software-engineering-hard) - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs) - [Best Countries for Software Engineers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/267-best-countries-for-software-engineers) - [Where To Find Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/396-where-to-find-software-engineering-jobs)
