They will have demonstrable experience in archaeological survey and recording techniques, managing project geospatial databases, processing photogrammetric data, working with georeferenced data, digitising of archaeological site plans and sections and plans, and other general archaeological illustration. The appointment will involve 4-8 week periods of fieldwork in North Africa (Morocco), as well as occasional short visits to collaborator institutions in North Africa and Spain. Applicants are therefore strongly advised to take into account their resilience and ability to spend time overseas when preparing their application., This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa. ## Description MEDGREENREV is a multi-institutional collaboration led by the University of Reading, the University of York, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Granada in partnership with UCL, the University of Basel, the University of Valencia and University of Murcia. UCL is responsible for the case-study region of North Africa. The Geomatics Technician will be part of the UCL team and based in London. We will be conducting new excavations and survey in North Africa and the post-holder will make a major contribution to the fieldwork, publications and dissemination of the project results MEDGREENREV (http://medgreenrev.com) explores the impact and legacy of the environmental transformations associated with multiple regimes and population movements during the 'medieval millennium', set against the backdrop of climatic fluctuations. Focusing on the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco, the project uses an interdisciplinary approach encompassing plants, animals, ceramics, sediments, soils and landscapes, drawn from archaeological, palaeoenvironmental and written sources. It aims to identify the opportunities and challenges that drove adaptation and innovation in both the Islamic and Christian worlds, and to develop case studies of past resilience to inform the future., Applications are now being sought for a 1.0 FTE Geomatics Technician at the UCL Institute of Archaeology within the ERC Synergy project 'MEDGREENREV: Re-thinking the "Green Revolution" in the Medieval Western Mediterranean (6th-16th centuries). This post is available from 1 September 2026 until 31 August 2028 in the first instance and, due to funding restrictions, is offered in the range Grade 7.30-7.32 (£43,981 - £46,261 per annum including London Allowance of £5,197). We are seeking a geomatics technician experienced in surveying, GIS and spatial data integration, articulation and visualisation in archaeology with extensive fieldwork experience and a background in academic/ commercial archaeology to join the project team at the UCL Institute of Archaeology. The post-holder will work closely with Prof. Fenwick and team-members and be primarily responsible for undertaking in-field survey and recording and combining it with remote sensing data such as that from maps and satellite imagery within a GIS environment, managing the project database and GIS, and presenting and analysing the spatial data gathered from excavation. They will participate in archaeological fieldwork in North Africa (Morocco) and be responsible for leading in-field survey and recording at the fieldsites, and organising and supporting project field logistics. They will collate data and perform routine data management tasks, such as data validation and correction, queries and editing in GIS. They will produce plans, maps, spreadsheets, illustrations and determine how best archaeological information can be displayed using GIS and illustration software in collaboration with project-members. They will contribute to articles, reports, presentations and other project outputs and maintain the project's online presence.
