The role requires someone who can respond quickly to live operational issues, apply practical short-term fixes where appropriate, and then work with the Product and Engineering Team to develop robust long-term solutions. This is an operations-facing technical role, designed to bridge the gap between frontline operational requirements and system capability. The post-holder will help resolve day-to-day technical system issues, identify practical hardware and software improvements, support the implementation of operational system changes, and liaise with the Product and Engineering Team to ensure operational priorities are clearly understood and translated into effective system developments. The role is held alongside the post-holder's existing 0.5 WTE System Administrator responsibilities within the Product Team. The Technical Systems Engineer element of the role is specifically focused on supporting operational efficiency, process reliability, production flow, and user adoption within the Operations Team. Key Responsibilities * Operational Systems Support Provide responsive day-to-day on-site support for technical systems used within operations, including production, testing, diagnostics, data erasure, asset tracking, inventory management, and related workflow tools. Investigate and resolve operational system issues that affect production flow, user access, device processing, reporting, or task completion, escalating more complex matters to the Product and Engineering Team where required. * Hardware, Software, & System Improvement Identify opportunities to improve the hardware, software, tools, and technical processes used by the Operations Team. Review recurring operational bottlenecks and assess whether system changes, better configuration, improved equipment, automation, or user training could improve efficiency, reduce rework, improve data accuracy, or strengthen process control. * Operational Link to Product & Engineering Teams Act as the primary operational link into the Product and Engineering Team for systems-related operational improvements. Translate operational requirements into clear and practical development requests, ensuring that product priorities reflect real user needs, operational impact, compliance requirements, and the practical realities of working in a live production environment. * System Testing, Rollout, and User Adoption Support the testing and rollout of new or amended system functionality affecting operational teams. Assist with user acceptance testing, workflow validation, hardware configuration, controlled deployment, and user training, helping to ensure that system changes are properly understood, embedded, and used consistently across operational areas. * Data, Reporting, and Process Control Support the accuracy and reliability of operational system data, including asset status, processing stages, inventory movement, productivity data, and exception reporting. Identify data quality issues and work with operational teams to improve the way information is captured, validated, and used to support production performance, quality, workflow, and compliance. * Troubleshooting & Issue Management Maintain clear visibility of recurring technical issues, system workarounds, user errors, and operational pain points. Ensure that issues are tracked, prioritised, and resolved based on operational impact, while helping to identify whether repeat problems require further training, process change, system configuration, or product development. * Cross-Functional Working Work closely with Operations, Product, Engineering, Compliance, Customer Success, and other relevant teams to ensure operational system requirements are understood and delivered. Build effective working relationships with frontline users, supervisors, managers, and technical colleagues, ensuring that operational issues are communicated clearly and not lost in translation between teams. * Training & Documentation Provide hands-on guidance to operational users on system use, troubleshooting, new features, and process changes. Support the creation and maintenance of user guides, quick-reference materials, troubleshooting notes, and operational instructions, ensuring staff have practical resources that support consistent and effective system use. * Continuous Improvement Use system insight, user feedback, and operational performance data to identify opportunities for ongoing improvement. Recommend practical changes that improve throughput, reduce manual intervention, support compliance, and make operational systems more effective, reliable, and scalable., This is a split role, with 0.5 WTE allocated to the post-holder's existing System Administrator responsibilities within the Product and Engineering Team, and 0.5 WTE allocated to the Technical Systems Engineer role within the Operations Team. The Technical Systems Engineer element of the role will be primarily focused on supporting operational systems, resolving day-to-day technical issues affecting production, identifying practical improvements, and acting as the operational link into the Product and Engineering Team for system and workflow developments. The post-holder will be expected to manage priorities across both parts of the role, with clear alignment between Operations and Product to ensure that urgent operational requirements are supported without compromising planned system administration, configuration, or product activity. ## Related Videos - [Model Based Systems Engineering in an Agile Product Development Process](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/68-model-based-systems-engineering-in-an-agile-product-development-process) - [Systems Thinking for Performance: How to Diagnose and Fix Slow Systems without Guessing](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2103-systems-thinking-for-performance-how-to-diagnose-and-fix-slow-systems-without-guessing) - [How To Test A Ball of Mud](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/173-how-to-test-a-ball-of-mud) - [Enterprise Linux as Container Images](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1610-enterprise-linux-as-container-images) - [Security Pitfalls for Software Engineers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/726-security-pitfalls-for-software-engineers) - [How I Built QA from Scratch in a Scaling Startup - no fluff real life story](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2041-how-i-built-qa-from-scratch-in-a-scaling-startup-no-fluff-real-life-story) ## Related Articles - [What is Software Engineering?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/289-what-is-software-engineering) - [Data Engineer Salary UK](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/253-data-engineer-salary-uk) - [Top Characteristics of a Software Engineer](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/166-top-characteristics-of-a-software-engineer) - [Software Engineer Salary London](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/252-software-engineer-salary-london) - [Software Engineer Salary in The UK](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/231-software-engineer-salary-in-the-uk) - [IT Salaries in UK](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/288-it-salaries-in-uk)
