What We Look For We are looking for a people leader with real engineering credibility. You don't need to spend your day writing code to be successful in this role, but you do need enough technical depth to earn the trust of engineers, coach through difficult technical problems, and contribute meaningfully when architectural decisions are being made. ## Description This is not primarily a hands-on coding role. We expect this leader to maintain enough technical depth to coach engineers, guide technical decisions, and participate credibly in architecture discussions while spending the majority of their time leading people, developing talent, and ensuring the team delivers high-quality software., We are currently seeking an Internal Applications Engineering Manager responsible for leading approximately eight engineers within our Internal Applications organization. Lead & Develop the Engineering Team * Lead, coach, and develop engineers with varying levels of full-stack experience. * Conduct regular 1:1s, establish development goals, provide timely and constructive feedback, and manage performance. * Build individualized development paths that help engineers expand their technical capabilities and increase their autonomy. * Recognize strengths and skill gaps across the team and intentionally connect engineers who can learn from and develop one another. * Create an environment of high trust, ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning. * Remove roadblocks and ensure engineers have the resources, context, and support necessary to succeed. Own Engineering Delivery * Partner with project and product management on roadmap priorities, work readiness, sequencing, dependencies, and stakeholder communication. * Own the engineering team's execution, capacity management, technical quality, and delivery accountability. * Identify delivery risks and resource constraints early and work across teams to resolve them. * Ensure work moves across the finish line when and at the quality level the team has committed to deliver. Provide Technical Leadership * Maintain sufficient hands-on technical depth to coach engineers, evaluate technical approaches, and provide meaningful technical direction while keeping direct coding responsibilities generally below 25% of the role. * Provide guidance across modern full-stack development using React, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS. * Partner with architecture leadership on application design and technical direction. * Translate business requirements into actionable technical work alongside engineering and business stakeholders. * Support the modernization of legacy applications into scalable, maintainable web-based platforms. * Promote and enforce strong engineering practices around architecture, code quality, testing, CI/CD, reliability, and maintainability. Partner Across the Organization * Collaborate with engineering leadership, architects, project managers, product partners, and business leaders to ensure teams are solving the right problems at the right time. * Translate effectively between technical and non-technical stakeholders. * Build strong working relationships across engineering teams and help resolve cross-team friction constructively. * Balance immediate delivery needs with longer-term engineering maturity and talent development. * Employee has an individual responsibility for knowledge of and compliance with laws, regulations, and policies. * Compliance is a condition of employment and is considered an element of job performance. * Maintain HIPAA and patient confidentiality. * Maintain regular and reliable attendance as assigned by your schedule. * Perform other job duties as assigned. Skills for Success Candidates who stand out will demonstrate: * People Leadership: You genuinely enjoy developing engineers and can adapt your coaching approach to individuals at very different stages of their technical growth. * Technical Credibility: You can hold meaningful conversations with engineers and architects, challenge technical decisions when appropriate, and provide direction without needing to be the strongest coder in the room. * Talent Development: You can identify strengths, skill gaps, and development opportunities and turn those observations into meaningful growth. * Delivery Leadership: You create clarity and accountability around priorities, commitments, quality, and outcomes. * Modernization Mindset: You understand how to evolve legacy systems and engineering capabilities pragmatically while continuing to support the business. * Cross-Functional Influence: You work effectively across engineering, architecture, project management, product, and business teams. * Pragmatic Decision-Making: You can balance engineering quality, business priorities, team capacity, and speed. * Low-Ego Leadership: You build trust, encourage collaboration, and care more about team outcomes than personal ownership of the solution., You'll inherit a team with different levels of experience in modern full-stack development. During the first several months, you'll play a particularly important role in helping engineers navigate that transition-understanding who needs more support, who needs less, and how to develop the team collectively. As those capabilities mature, your focus will increasingly shift toward the core responsibilities of engineering leadership: developing people, driving accountability and quality, removing roadblocks, and ensuring commitments are delivered. You'll thrive here if you enjoy developing people, creating accountability without micromanaging, simplifying complicated problems, and helping engineering teams become stronger over time. Our environment offers meaningful autonomy and the opportunity to influence how an evolving engineering organization works. You'll partner closely with technical and business leaders while leading a team through an important stage of its modernization. ## Related Videos - [Watch Tests Go Brrrr! : Getting Started with Cypress in ReactJS](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/282-watch-tests-go-brrrr-getting-started-with-cypress-in-reactjs) - [Shifting Stress to Progress— Understanding DevOps to do DevOps Better](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/268-shifting-stress-to-progress-understanding-devops-to-do-devops-better) - [Why segmenting your infrastructure into tiers makes your infrastructure design better](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1960-why-segmenting-your-infrastructure-into-tiers-makes-your-infrastructure-design-better) - [Crew Management System for Airlines: Plan duties for pilots & flight attendants worldwide](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1444-crew-management-system-for-airlines-plan-duties-for-pilots-flight-attendants-worldwide) - [From DevOps to Scaled DevOps: How We’re Rebuilding Continuous Delivery as a Platform](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100018-from-devops-to-scaled-devops-how-we-re-rebuilding-continuous-delivery-as-a-platform) - [Engineering/Manager Pendulum: Generating compound interest on your career](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100348-engineering-manager-pendulum-generating-compound-interest-on-your-career) ## Related Articles - [How to Become an AI Engineer](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/331-how-to-become-an-ai-engineer) - [Navigating the AI Shift](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/629-navigating-the-ai-shift) - [How to Answer the Interview Question: “Why Do You Want to Be a Software Engineer?”](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/392-how-to-answer-the-interview-question-why-do-you-want-to-be-a-software-engineer) - [What is Software Engineering in the Age of AI?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/640-what-is-software-engineering-in-the-age-of-ai) - [Dev Digest 120 - Apple and peers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/455-dev-digest-120-apple-and-peers) - [From developer to manager – what does it take to become an engineering manager?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/42-from-developer-to-manager-what-does-it-take-to-become-an-engineering-manager)
