Message About Ignite Hubs We are an award-winning education charity for children and young people based in London. Ignite Hubs is undergoing an ambitious digital transformation and is looking for experienced technology leaders to join our volunteer CTO team. We are developing three connected digital products: * a new website, including registration and booking; * the Ignite Learning & Careers Hub, supporting learning, skills and careers development for young people; and * the Ignite Portal, supporting the management of volunteers, freelancers, mentors, tutors and other team members. Rather than expecting one volunteer CTO to cover the full breadth of technology leadership, we are building a small team of two to three CTOs. Each CTO will have a distinct area of primary ownership based on their experience and strengths, while working collaboratively across our overall technology strategy. Possible areas of ownership may include: * platform and solution architecture; * software engineering and technical delivery; * cloud infrastructure and DevOps; * data architecture and integrations; * cybersecurity, privacy and technical risk; * AI and emerging technologies; or * another area of expertise relevant to our digital transformation. The precise portfolio will be agreed according to your experience, interests and the expertise already represented within the CTO team. As a CTO, you will provide strategic technical leadership and direction while remaining willing to work hands-on where needed. We are a small charity, so everyone is expected to contribute practically as well as strategically, whether that means reviewing code, helping resolve a technical problem, supporting an integration or stepping into delivery at an important stage. You may: * help shape and maintain our technology strategy and roadmap; * provide technical leadership within your agreed area of ownership; * advise the CEO on technology decisions, priorities, risks and investment; * help define the architecture connecting our products, systems and data; * guide and support volunteer developers and other technical team members; * review technical solutions, architecture and code where appropriate; * help resolve complex technical issues and delivery blockers; * establish appropriate engineering, security, documentation and quality standards; * support decisions relating to Azure, APIs, authentication, databases and integrations; * contribute to our planned transition from Salesforce to Supabase; * identify technical risks and help develop appropriate mitigations; * ensure important technical knowledge and decisions are documented; * contribute to the recruitment, mentoring and development of technical volunteers; and * work with the other CTOs to provide continuity and cover when team members are unavailable. Our technology leadership model Our CTOs work as a collaborative technology leadership team, but each person has clearly defined areas of primary responsibility. For significant areas of technology, we aim to identify: Primary owner * Secondary/cover * Contributors This enables people to lead according to their expertise while ensuring knowledge is shared, and the charity is not dependent on any one individual. CTOs will support and challenge one another on significant technical decisions and work together to ensure that our different digital products form one coherent and sustainable technology ecosystem. What are we looking for? We are looking for experienced technology professionals who can combine strategic thinking with a practical understanding of software and digital product delivery. You are likely to have substantial experience in one or more of the following areas: * CTO, VP Engineering, Head of Engineering, Technical Director, Principal Engineer, Solution Architect or another senior technical role; * software, solution or enterprise architecture; * modern web application and platform development; * cloud technologies, ideally including Microsoft Azure; * back-end, front-end or full-stack engineering; * relational databases, including PostgreSQL; * platforms such as Supabase; * APIs and systems integration; * Salesforce or other CRM platforms; * identity, authentication and role-based access; * DevOps, CI/CD and deployment practices; * GitHub and modern software-development workflows; * cybersecurity, privacy and technical risk management; * data architecture and data governance; * artificial intelligence and emerging technology; We do not expect one person to have expertise across all of these areas. The purpose of our multi-CTO model is to bring together people with complementary strengths. What are we looking for? We would particularly value someone who: * can think strategically while remaining comfortable getting involved practically; * has deep expertise in one or more areas of technology; * is comfortable working collaboratively with other senior technology leaders; * can provide constructive challenge and explain the reasoning behind technical recommendations; * communicates complex technical issues clearly to non-technical colleagues; * enjoys mentoring and supporting developers with different levels of experience; * can balance technical ambition with the resources available to a small charity; * values good documentation, knowledge sharing and sustainable engineering practices; * is comfortable working in an evolving environment where not everything has yet been defined; and * wants to use their experience to increase opportunities for children and young people. What difference will you make? Technology is becoming central to the way Ignite Hubs support children and young people. Our Ignite Learning & Careers Hub aims to connect learning, skills development, careers, opportunities and personalised pathways within one digital experience. Alongside this, we are developing new systems to improve how children and young people register for our programmes and how we manage the volunteers, freelancers and other team members who help deliver our work. As part of our CTO team, you will help us make informed technical decisions, strengthen our architecture and engineering practices, reduce technology risk and support our volunteer developers. Your involvement will also help us build resilience into our technology leadership by sharing knowledge and reducing reliance on individual volunteers. Ultimately, your contribution will help us develop sustainable technology that enables Ignite Hubs to support more children and young people with their learning, skills and future careers.
