Scientist monitoring geophysics Utrecht Werken op afstand: Hybrid Uren per week: 32-40 hours/week Scientist monitoring geophysics Utrecht Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Scientist monitoring geophysics at TNO in Utrecht! About this position Have you just finalised your Master in geophysics/geomechanics/seismology and are you passionate to continue learning about geophysical surveying and monitoring technologies? Would you like to become more adept at signal processing, and subsurface imaging using the latest sensing technologies? Do you want to work on innovative research projects that contribute to the energy transition, safe subsurface operations, and scientific breakthroughs? Are you excited to work in an international applied research environment, and are genuinely curious, dedicated, and a have willingness to learn? We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Geophysicist to contribute to geophysical monitoring and imaging projects to strengthen our team. This is your opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that make a real impact on the future of sustainable energy. What will be your role? The general aim of your work is to improve our understanding of subsurface processes through advanced geophysical imaging and monitoring technologies, with a strong focus on fiber optic sensing and seismic imaging methods. As a researcher you will be working with experts from the geophysics and geomechanics teams on a wide range of monitoring and imaging data sets acquired in TNO projects and industrial collaborations. You will contribute to the development of robust and future-proof workflows for storing, processing, imaging, monitoring and interpreting these data sets. The work focus is twofold and focusses on active seismic imaging and monitoring, as well as on induced seismicity monitoring. For your work you will have access to (deep borehole) geophone data, fiber optic data obtained in boreholes or from (dark-fiber) networks and nodal seismic data. Your activities will vary from project to project and may include DAS-VSP processing, seismic imaging, signal enhancement, the detection and localization of (induced) seismic events, focal mechanism analysis, time-lapse monitoring, and data integration. Depending on your interests and project needs, you may also contribute to machine learning applications, monitoring system design, geophysical field work and field deployments, and the development of innovative geophysical workflows. The work will contribute to our research on subsurface imaging and the monitoring of changes thereof in response to geothermal or storage operations. The research covers induced earthquake source processes, how this relates to geology, and the geomechanical response of the subsurface. You are expected to present project results in reports, conferences and scientific papers. Overall, a passion for the above topics, independence, ownership, dedication, and an inherent drive to take TNO's knowledge, skills and project portfolio on this topic to the next level are what we are looking for.
