Fachinformatiker erstellen komplexe EDV-Systeme und passen sie an die Kundenbedürfnisse an. In der Fachrichtung "Anwendungsentwicklung" steht die Entwicklung von Programmen (Software) im Vordergrund während in der Fachrichtung "Systemintegration" die Administration von Netzwerken einen größeren Stellenwert einnimmt. Fachinformatiker übergeben die Systeme an den Kunden und weisen ihn in die Benutzung ein. Auch die Wartung, Instandhaltung sowie Reparatur gehört zu ihrem Aufgabengebiet. Sie sind in allen Wirtschaftsbereichen, hauptsächlich aber in der IT-Branche, tätig.
