This role bridges product design, manufacturing layouts, material flow, and packaging solutions to ensure efficient, safe, and cost-effective production and shipment of large industrial equipment. The engineer works closely with design engineering, production, quality, and logistics teams to develop scalable manufacturing layouts, improve throughput, reduce waste, and ensure products are packaged and shipped to meet customer, regulatory, and transportation requirements. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Manufacturing Process & Layout Engineering * Develop and optimize manufacturing processes for conveyor systems, racking, and warehouse automation equipment. * Design and improve plant layouts, work cells, and material flow for efficient assembly and fabrication. * Analyze cycle times, takt time, labor utilization, and bottlenecks to improve throughput. * Support new product introductions (NPI) by defining manufacturing and packaging processes early in design. Packaging & Shipping Engineering * Design packaging solutions for large, heavy, or irregular conveyor and warehouse components. * Ensure packaging protects products during handling, storage, and transportation while minimizing cost and waste. * Collaborate with logistics to optimize palletization, crating, container loading, and freight efficiency. * Ensure compliance with customer, carrier, and international shipping requirements. Continuous Improvement & Cost Reduction * Lead lean manufacturing, kaizen, and continuous improvement initiatives. * Identify opportunities to reduce labor, material, scrap, damage, and packaging costs. * Develop standard work instructions, process documentation, and visual aids. * Support automation or tooling improvements to improve safety and productivity. Cross-Functional Collaboration * Partner with design engineering to ensure manufacturability and packability (DFM/DFA/DFP). * Support quality teams in root cause analysis and corrective actions. * Provide technical support to production and resolve manufacturing or packaging issues. * Work with suppliers to improve packaging materials and manufacturing methods. Documentation & Standards * Create and maintain process flows, work instructions, routings, and BOM structures. * Establish packaging standards and specifications. * Support PFMEA, control plans, and risk assessments. Other duties as assigned * Flexibility to take on additional responsibilities aligned with departmental or organizational goals. ## Related Videos - [Remote Driving on Plant Grounds with State-of-the-Art Cloud Technologies](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/251-remote-driving-on-plant-grounds-with-state-of-the-art-cloud-technologies) - [Beyond Dashboards: Fixing Text-to-SQL with Semantic RAG](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2036-beyond-dashboards-fixing-text-to-sql-with-semantic-rag) - [Data Science in Retail](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/586-data-science-in-retail) - [More efficient software for more efficient microchips](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1164-more-efficient-software-for-more-efficient-microchips) - [Scaling Talent from Within: How Upskilling Fuels Growth](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1379-scaling-talent-from-within-how-upskilling-fuels-growth) - [Data Science on Software Data](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/162-data-science-on-software-data) ## Related Articles - [Now is the time for industrialized software development](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/601-now-is-the-time-for-industrialized-software-development) - [From developer to manager – what does it take to become an engineering manager?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/42-from-developer-to-manager-what-does-it-take-to-become-an-engineering-manager) - [How to Write a CV and Interview if You Don't Fully Qualify For The Job](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/183-how-to-write-a-cv-and-interview-if-you-don-t-fully-qualify-for-the-job) - [Where To Find Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/396-where-to-find-software-engineering-jobs) - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs) - [Top Characteristics of a Software Engineer](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/166-top-characteristics-of-a-software-engineer)
