While subject matter experts will provide support, initiative and self-direction are key to success in this position. * The primary work environment is a climate-controlled office or approved teleservice location. Occasional field visits may be available, and these could involve travel to remote and rugged locations with varying weather conditions, requiring a general comfort level with such field environments. the ability to take initiative and manage tasks independently, while collaborating with subject matter experts as needed. * Applicants who have obtained or are pursuing a GIS degree or certificate and/or with GIS experience are preferred. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the NPS GIS office is hosting a cohort of GIS stewards. The National Park Service (NPS) Alaska Region GIS Team enhances park-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) efforts by developing, maintaining, and improving tools and data that support Alaska's parks and programs. We combine geospatial technology, staff expertise, and varied information resources to create, manage, and disseminate spatial data. Additionally, our team supports the Alaska GIS user community with cartographic products, custom workflows, specialized toolsets, and training., We are seeking a GIS Steward to join our team in Anchorage, Alaska and provide crucial data management support. The Steward will primarily focus on advancing the Alaska Region Enterprise GIS and helping to maintain the Permanent Data Set (PDS). This position plays a key role in supporting MAPLand Act implementation by ensuring compliance with MAPLand and updated NPS spatial data standards and improving the quality of Alaska datasets. Opportunities to contribute to additional GIS projects may be available throughout the service term. This position will significantly enhance the incumbent's proficiency in key NPS GIS Competencies, including Coordination and Communication, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Technology Application, Information Quality Assurance, and Data Management and Metadata., * Duties of the GIS Steward position include, but are not limited to the following: + Data Organization, Integration, and Quality Assurance. Organize, prepare, and validate existing geospatial data for addition to the Alaska Region PDS and NPS National Datasets, ensuring adherence to national and regional spatial data standards and verifying data accuracy and completeness. + Metadata Management and Compliance. Maintain and update metadata and data themes within the Alaska Region Theme Manager data discovery tool, ensuring completeness, consistency, and compliance with MAPLand Act and NPS spatial data standards. + Data Workflow Development. Develop and document efficient data editing workflows and best practices for data creation and field collection, incorporating quality checks to promote data consistency and accuracy. + Standard Operation Procedures and Governance. Create and maintain standard operating guidelines (SOPs) for geospatial data creation, management, access, and sharing, embedding quality assurance methods to foster strong data governance and usability. + GIS Support and Project Assistance. Provide user support for Alaska Region GIS Helpdesk requests and contribute to other ongoing GIS projects, gaining varied experience. + Team Collaboration. Actively participate in weekly GIS Team meetings and other team-oriented events and discussions, contributing to a collaborative work environment and sharing insights on data management practices. + Program Engagement. Participate in weekly Cohort meetings, led by NPS GIS Program support staff, maximizing learning and networking opportunities. + Capstone Project. Design and deliver a presentation to the NPS GIS community at the conclusion of the position, showcasing accomplishments and improved competencies., * Typically, this position is expected to serve 40 hours per week, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service * Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
