Working within established model-based systems engineering frameworks, this position ensures all system components work together effectively and meet project requirements. The Systems Engineer focuses on verifying and validating product requirements according to the systems engineering lifecycle process while maintaining clear documentation of design decisions and system interfaces. This Systems Engineer III-IV role owns the complete lifecycle journey of complex nuclear fuel production systems from initial concept through operations, executing INCOSE-aligned systems engineering processes at every phase. The engineer establishes and maintains enterprise engineering procedures defining how design control, configuration management, verification & validation (V&V), and quality assurance (QA) are executed. Throughout the lifecycle journey, the Systems Engineer owns multi-system integration and manages configuration baselines for assigned subsystems, ensuring all components work together effectively and meet NRC and DOE requirements. Core responsibilities include interface management, design change control, and comprehensive V&V activities - managing Requirements Verification Traceability Matrices (RVTM), developing and executing test plans, overseeing Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and applying rigorous verification methods (inspection, analysis, demonstration, and test). The engineer manages requirements traceability using JAMA as the primary platform (IBM DOORS experience transferable) and coordinates cross-discipline activities using JIRA for project management and issue tracking. The role requires proven systems engineering leadership: translating ambiguous high-level direction into actionable plans, driving cross-functional efforts to completion with minimal oversight, and resolving stakeholder concerns through systematic problem-solving. Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities * Apply systems thinking and take a holistic approach to solve problems, analyze and design systems, considering the interdependencies and interactions between various components. * Lead and manage systems engineering lifecycle efforts surrounding: + Stakeholder and operational analysis + Requirement identification, decomposition, and management + Functional decomposition and modeling + Logical system architecture development and modeling + Physical product definition, interface management, and change control + Design integration and testing + System verification and validation + Concept of operations development and modeling * Develop and maintain system behavior models using model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools within established Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) frameworks. * Lead the identification and monitoring of technical risks and the development of risk mitigation strategies. * Support value engineering activities including cost analyses, economic feasibility assessments, and cost reduction opportunity identification. * Write and review engineering documentation, reports, and communicate technical details and project progress to technical and non-technical stakeholders. * Execute systems engineering processes within X-energy's quality management framework. * Work across engineering disciplines to ensure effective integration of system components and subsystems. * Perform work in accordance with X-energy quality assurance procedures to ensure engineering products meet required standards. * Always maintain professional demeanor and behavior in all forms of communication. * Perform other duties as assigned by manager. Level IV Level Tasks/Responsibilities * Lead the execution the core tasks and responsibilities listed in the Job Profile Task/Responsibilities section of this document, without close supervision and some latitude for independent judgment. * Provide feedback and guidance to more junior team members with the execution of the core tasks and responsibilities listed in the Job Profile Task/Responsibilities section of this document. * Lead small groups of engineers to solve complex technical problems and deliver high quality engineering work products on time and within budget. ## Related Videos - [ Secure Code Superstars: Empowering Developers and Surpassing Security Challenges Together](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/422-secure-code-superstars-empowering-developers-and-surpassing-security-challenges-together) - [Wardley Maps for Software Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/665-wardley-maps-for-software-developers) - [Improving quality with Agentic AI with Rovo Dev and Xray](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2005-improving-quality-with-agentic-ai-with-rovo-dev-and-xray) - [Model Based Systems Engineering in an Agile Product Development Process](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/68-model-based-systems-engineering-in-an-agile-product-development-process) - [A Developer's Framework for Any Tool Migration](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/2035-a-developer-s-framework-for-any-tool-migration) - [Old tools, new tricks](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1916-old-tools-new-tricks) ## Related Articles - [What is Software Engineering?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/289-what-is-software-engineering) - [Is Software Engineering Hard?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/448-is-software-engineering-hard) - [Where to Find Entry-Level Software Engineering Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/397-where-to-find-entry-level-software-engineering-jobs) - [The Ultimate Software Engineer Career Path Guide for 2023](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/146-the-ultimate-software-engineer-career-path-guide-for-2023) - [Is Software Engineering Over-Saturated?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/418-is-software-engineering-over-saturated) - [Software Engineer Career: Things You Should Know](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/143-software-engineer-career-things-you-should-know)
