This role is centered on developing complex, data-driven interfaces that allow users to understand, manage, and operate distributed systems across edge and remote environments. These are not simple CRUD interfaces-they are operational control surfaces for real-world systems. You will own and drive the frontend experience, while working across the stack to ensure tight alignment between UI behavior, APIs, and underlying system capabilities. You'll collaborate closely with backend engineers, platform engineers, and designers to build responsive, reliable, and intuitive experiences on top of complex APIs and distributed system state. While frontend-focused, this role requires strong full-stack awareness-understanding how data flows through systems, how APIs are designed, and how frontend decisions impact system behavior, especially in asynchronous and distributed environments. What You'll Work On: * Building interfaces for managing individual assets and large fleets of systems * Designing and implementing data-rich UIs that reflect real-time and distributed system state * Developing workflows for deploying, updating, and monitoring systems across environments * Handling complex state management and asynchronous data flows * Integrating frontend applications with backend APIs and platform services * Improving usability and clarity for technically complex operations * Partnering with UX to translate complex system behavior into intuitive user experiences, * Design and build scalable, maintainable frontend applications * Collaborate with product, UX, and backend engineers to define and implement features * Translate complex backend capabilities into clear and usable interfaces * Write clean, testable, and well-structured code * Develop and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, and end-to-end) * Contribute to frontend architecture and technical decisions * Identify and improve performance, reliability, and usability issues * Work effectively in a remote, asynchronous environment, Defense Unicorns' customers are mission-focused leaders across public and private enterprises. We proudly support defense and civil agencies across the U.S. government and we work closely with the creators of leading-edge software solutions to deliver value to the mission-owner by improving the security and consumability of commercial software products. What We Work On * Kubernetes * Cloud Environments (AWS/Google Cloud Platform and Azure) * Infrastructure-as-code (like Terraform/Pulumi) * Continuous Delivery and automation tooling * GitOps * Containers * CNCF projects and open source products and packages * Helm/Kustomize-Value Stream Mapping * Building and improving security delivery * Building Kubernetes and cloud native applications ## Related Videos - [Build and Deploy a Fullstack App with Open Source Tooling](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/775-build-and-deploy-a-fullstack-app-with-open-source-tooling) - [Why segmenting your infrastructure into tiers makes your infrastructure design better](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1960-why-segmenting-your-infrastructure-into-tiers-makes-your-infrastructure-design-better) - [From DevOps to Scaled DevOps: How We’re Rebuilding Continuous Delivery as a Platform](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100018-from-devops-to-scaled-devops-how-we-re-rebuilding-continuous-delivery-as-a-platform) - [Rest API Antipatterns](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100208-rest-api-antipatterns) - [Meet Your New BFF: Backend to Frontend without the Duct Tape](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/682-meet-your-new-bff-backend-to-frontend-without-the-duct-tape) - [Unleashing Potential Across Teams: The Power of Infrastructure as Code](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/930-unleashing-potential-across-teams-the-power-of-infrastructure-as-code) ## Related Articles - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs) - [What’s the Difference Between Frontend and Backend Development?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/240-what-s-the-difference-between-frontend-and-backend-development) - [Dev Digest 121 - AI goes offline](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/456-dev-digest-121-ai-goes-offline) - [Is Software Engineering Over-Saturated?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/418-is-software-engineering-over-saturated) - [Dev Digest 120 - Apple and peers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/455-dev-digest-120-apple-and-peers) - [The Best 7 Frontend Frameworks for Developers in 2025](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/400-the-best-7-frontend-frameworks-for-developers-in-2025)
