Go is preferred; ideally you've shipped and maintained Go services in production. Strong engineers from another language who are excited about Go are welcome. * API and integration experience. You've built production integrations with payment processors (Stripe, Braintree), CRMs, and communication platforms (Twilio, SendGrid) and know how to keep them reliable and debuggable. * Payments mindset. Correctness over cleverness. A bug in financial software isn't bad UX it's money moving the wrong way. Independent debugging. When something breaks, you dig in and don't call it done until you know why it happened. * Startup background. You've worked somewhere that ships fast, ideally zero to one or through a scale event. You make decisions without perfect information and don't wait to be told what to do. * Bonus. Rails codebase experience (useful migration context) or familiarity with RAG pipelines and LLM-adjacent data architecture. What We're Not Looking For * Someone who needs a well-defined ticket before starting work * Someone who treats code review as a formality * Someone who escalates bugs to QA rather than debugging them independently * Someone whose primary experience is cloud infrastructure or DevOps - we need product engineers who own features end to end * Someone who measures success by tickets closed rather than systems that work * Someone looking for a large company with narrow ownership and a long approval chain, * 3+ years of technical experience building and maintaining core backend systems * Experience deploying to and monitoring your systems on AWS * You have owned and lead projects from planning phase through delivery and support * You think about performance and trade offs constantly * Experience working with data pipelines and you are comfortable connecting systems you build to existing data infrastructure * You have working with financial service APIs such as payments processors or lender origination * Experience as a generalist, working on whatever part of the stack necessary to solve the problem at hand * A passion for building delightful applications and the systems that support them * Care deeply about the quality of your work while balancing delivery expectations. * An obsessive focus on customers and iterative learning. ## Description Hearth is the AI growth system for America's home improvement contractors. With 15,000+ paying customers, default profitability, and backing from top-tier investors like Founders Fund and 8VC, we provide the revenue-critical software tradespeople rely on to run their businesses. We are now building our next layer of innovation: an autonomous AI employee for every contractor. By answering calls 24/7, qualifying leads, and booking jobs, this AI ensures small businesses never miss a lead again. We're on a mission to bring AI to the trades-and we need your help to build it. The Opportunity We are searching for a strong backend engineer to join a small, high-ownership team at a pivotal moment. Our backend is actively migrating from a Ruby on Rails monolith to a Go microservice architecture that will power our AI features, payment flows, and third-party integrations at scale. The role works directly with the CTO on the distributed systems and orchestration infrastructure powering long-running AI workflows across voice, messaging and financial products. The team is 8 people and prioritises velocity, ownership and shipping over process., * Build and maintain APIs that serve 15,000+ active contractors payments, onboarding, lead management, and AI-powered workflows * Integrate with third-party services payment processors, CRMs, communication platforms (Twilio), and other contractor-facing tools; ensuring those integrations reliable and observable * Contribute to the Rails Go migration: move data models and business logic into Onikisu to expand the context available to our AI products * Design data models that don't become technical debt six months later * Debug production issues independently. Find the root cause, fix it, and make sure it doesn't come back * Review code as someone who holds a high bar and helps teammates level up ## Related Videos - [Navigating Growth, Scaling Challenges, and Office Expansions with David Singleton, CTO at Stripe](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100362-navigating-growth-scaling-challenges-and-office-expansions-with-david-singleton-cto-at-stripe) - [Throwing off the burdens of scale in engineering](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/608-throwing-off-the-burdens-of-scale-in-engineering) - [From DevOps to Scaled DevOps: How We’re Rebuilding Continuous Delivery as a Platform](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100018-from-devops-to-scaled-devops-how-we-re-rebuilding-continuous-delivery-as-a-platform) - [20 billion requests a week: Upgrading Twilio's API gateway at scale](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100234-20-billion-requests-a-week-upgrading-twilio-s-api-gateway-at-scale) - [Build Your Own Subscription-based Course Platform](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/321-build-your-own-subscription-based-course-platform) - [DevOps Maturity Check – a way to balance autonomy and alignment](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/58-devops-maturity-check-a-way-to-balance-autonomy-and-alignment) ## Related Articles - [The 7 Most Popular Backend Frameworks for Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/403-the-7-most-popular-backend-frameworks-for-developers) - [Dev Digest 121 - AI goes offline](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/456-dev-digest-121-ai-goes-offline) - [Dev Digest 120 - Apple and peers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/455-dev-digest-120-apple-and-peers) - [Is Software Engineering Over-Saturated?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/418-is-software-engineering-over-saturated) - [Find a Developer Job: 12 Best Job Sites For Developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/165-find-a-developer-job-12-best-job-sites-for-developers) - [Fully Remote Software Engineer Jobs](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/447-fully-remote-software-engineer-jobs)
