If it’s an annual review or a promotion, small pay bumps are not going to make much of a difference. In your negotiations try to fight for an addition €10,000 (or more) per year. As we go through salary by city, experience, role and technology refer to the Austria tax brackets (below) so that you can roughly estimate your monthly income after tax. Or you can open up a [tax calculator](https://relocate.me/net-pay-calculators/austria). 🇦 **Austrian tax brackets:** | Annual salary | Tax rate | | --- | --- | | Less than €11,693 | 0% | | €11,694 – €19,134 | 20% | | €19,135 – €32,075 | 30% | | €32,076 – €62,080 | 42% | | €62,081 – €93,120 | 48% | | €93,121 – €1,000,000 | 50% | | \> €1,000,000 | 55% | ‍ [Austrian Public Holidays in 2023](/magazine/174-austrian-public-holidays-in-2024) ## Salary by experience It is very hard to estimate entry-level salary and senior salary ranges. For an entry level position there could be a pay difference of ~€10,000 depending on education and the company. Someone with a masters or Bachelors in Computer Science will probably get offers in the low 40s. A candidate who has a bootcamp certificate and is entering a startup might earn a starting salary in the mid-to-low 30s. Senior developers in Austria also have a sliding pay scale. They can easily earn over €60,000 and upwards of €80,000 (if they are working for a growing startup or established company). For quick estimates see the chart below — please note that these are benchmark salaries that are generally lower for senior developers and higher for juniors. While it’s always important to not underestimate your worth, overestimating can also hamper your negotiations. ## Salary by type and technology There are a lot of different types of [software developer](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/lexicon/software-engineer). A backend developer in Austria will (on average) earn more than a [fullstack](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/lexicon/full-stack-developer) or front end developer. Mobile and DevOps developers in Austria are earning the most. Not all technologies are equal. A developer skilled in Docker will generally earn more than a developer who knows JavaScript. But almost every company will need a JS developer. So let’s look at the top technologies recruiters are asking for on our platform. This is number of job postings per technology. **Most desired developer skills:** ‍ ## Average salary by year Let’s track salary data over time for the top developer roles (frontend, backend and fullstack). As you can see there is a generally upward trend in average salary, this data is based on the StackOverflow surveys (2017-2022). **Software developer frontend vs backend vs fullstack (EUR):** ‍ ## Average salary by city These estimates are based on salary data from Glassdoor. [Glassdoor](https://www.glassdoor.com/Award/Best-Places-to-Work-LST_KQ0,19.htm) has ‘Very High Confidence’ in these figures but you probably shouldn’t. Again, use these salaries as benchmarks. Apparently software developers in Linz are reporting the highest pay on average followed by Vienna (the capital) and Graz (second-biggest city). Interestingly, software developers working in Austria report lower salaries than those working just across the border [in Germany](/magazine/194-software-developer-salary-in-germany-2023). ## Top Austrian companies Austria is home to a lot of multinational companies. You can find Sony, IBM, and Microsoft offices in Vienna along with great Austrian companies like Redbull, KTM, and Voestalpine.
